Full frame camera with ISO and SS dials?

I have heard more than one rumor that Fuji, and Ricoh/Pentax will announce FF cameras sometime this year; I have also read on Thom Hogan's site that the Nikon-exclusive use agreement to the Sony-made 36-MP FF sensor used in the D800 and D800e and the Sony a7R will expire this year; perhaps there will be a FF Fuji before Christmas??? A guy can hope!

You mean a 36mp mirrrorless full frame, exmor sensor equipped camera that doesn't have light leaks around the lens mount, or shutter that can wake the dead? I'm there!

Yes. I have forgotten the dials. I want those functions above, which is what the X-T1 does, but I want to be able to change the ISO/SS/aperture without having to take the camera away from my eyes and press a bunch of buttons on a small LED screen.

On a screen. Such as a touch screen ?
maybe you tried an entry level consumer dSLR instead of a higher end one.

with your dials etc .. I would have to learn how many clicks etc and remember where I was in SS / Aperture etc if I were not to look at it.
in dSLRs you can change things without taking your face away from the viewfinder (it tells you information in the viewfinder ), of course, you would have to remember where the certain buttons are just like you would have to remember which dial is which.

I'm still confused by this thread.

You can do so without moving the camera from your eye.

..... and I want the camera to choose the "appropriate" mode.....

What do you mean by this? What 'mode'? You're already in P mode. What else do you want the camera to do? You turn a dial, and the shutter speed and aperture change. Turn it until you get either the aperture or the shutter speed you want and fire away. What does an 'appropriate mode' do at this point?

Yeah...but Fuji vowed to FIX that light leak issue soon after it was discovered.

And OMG...that SHUTTER racket in the Sony A7r...and all the vibration...Photographer presses shutter release, camera terminates live view...SLAMS closed first shutter curtain...immediately OPENS first shutter curtain...then SLAMS closed second curtain...yeah, baby!!! SONY's idea of how to get good images using a 36-megapixel sensor...why the heck did Sony not implement the electronic first curtain shutter system like they did in their 24-MP A7 base model?

But even more puzzling: Why did Sony cripple their camera with only 11-bit, visibly lossy RAW files, and not the 12- or 14-bit RAW file options the sensor delivers in the Nikon D800 or D800e cameras?

He like the gadget setup of the Fuji
and doesn't understand the dial/mode/button setup of dSLRs and how much faster they are.

I guess next time I buy a new car, I'll look for one with the headlight high-low switch on the left floorboard. And the ignition in the dash instead of on the column. And a manual H-pattern tranny. And windows with cranks. That's what I grew up with.

Huh? I was talking about the rather nasty light leak on the A7R. With the sun at an oblique angle it has light leaks around the mount and the lens release button. Creates some wicked flare when shooting landscapes late in the afternoon with the sun off to the side, say 10 or 2ish. That and the shutter issue are two of the biggest things that have kept me from picking up and A7R. Those combined with the other issues simply reinforces my opinion of Sony as a company that seems to create products that look good on spec sheets but are always cocked up with some "fatal flaw" that would be completely obvious if they had let actual consumers use it first. I just keep hoping that one of these days they'll get it right.

I didn't even know about a Fuji light leak issue, probably because I haven't looked to hard at buying a Fuji. :blushing:

I wouldn't hold my breath for the Fuji FF mirrorless. They'd have to introduce a whole new lens mount.

They can bring back the old X-Mount and add some electrical contacts to it. :)

#1: depends on the camera.

#2: I do not mean to sound patronizing, but I sincerely do not know how to better explain myself beyond how I explained it before. Here is what I want the camera to do, instead of giving a general overview, I will list every single possible example... (this is what X-T1 does).

There are three things I can turn on the X-T1 - aperture ring, iso dial, shutter speed dial. Each has numbers, and each has an 'A' for auto on the dial.
1. If all three are on A, then everything's auto.
2. If iso is not on A, it will shoot at what iso I pick, and auto aperture and ss.
3. if aperture is not on A, it will shoot at what aperture I pick, and auto iso and ss.
4. If ss is not on A, it will shoot at what ss I pick, and auto iso and aperture.
5. If neither iso nor aperture are on A, it will shoot at what iso and aperture I pick, and auto ss.
6. If neither iso nor ss are on A, it will shoot at what iso and ss I pick, and auto aperture.
7. If neither aperture nor ss are on A, it will shoot at what ss and aperture I pick, and auto iso.
8. If none of the three are on A, it will shoot at what iso, aperture, and ss I pick.

I want this... but in a full frame camera. By "appropriate mode" I mean the camera will do the last clause in the sentence in #1-7. Also what I mean by X-T1 does not have a mode button.

If and when FF releases that full frame, I'm jumping on it! And the light leaks aren't bad. It's only under very specific (and few) conditions. Fuji is also offering to fix them. I just sent mine in, will get it back in 2 weeks!

My a77 has dedicated ISO and WB buttons on top near the display. The ISO I can reach without changing my grip then it's just a matter of choosing the ISO with the joystick. It's not as quick as spinning a wheel but then again I change the ISO nearly as much as I might change shutter speed or aperture.

What you're describing would be called, Manual (select everything), shutter priority (select shutter speed, camera selects aperture), and aperture priority (select aperture and camera selects shutter speed). Auto iso is just that, auto iso. You can do these now on Canon and Nikon cameras, through the veiwfinder, with the dials that already exist on the camera, whithout having to move your entire hand to do so. ;)

Yeah...Fuji Steps Up to Fix X-T1 Light Leak Issue Only Days After It was Spotted

The Fuji XT-1 had a light leak issue, and FUji stepped right up to the plate with a "fix" right after the camera was released.

The thing is this: with the "new world wide web", the earliest websites and bloggers are making money by getting early, pre-release cameras, and then they put up mostly glowing, fawning, in-lust-with-this! "reviews"...they then make MONEY for THEMSELVES by click-through purchases from early adopters who read the hype and the fawning. So..the earlier, and the more-positrive these early web-based "reviews" are, the more money these influential web site owners make for themselves. The way the new WWW works is that certain, influential web sites rush to be the first ones to offer the cameras for pre-order and for sale, and they tend to gloss over a lotta things, and try to be very, very positive about all new products.

The Sony A7 and A7r review by Thom Hogan came out late, after extensive personal use. The real story? Sub-optimal capture data,as he describes it... 11-bit RAW files...

Read Michael Reichman's "further thoughts" about the Fuji XT-1, which detail the camera's weaknesses, as he sees them. Fuji X-T1 Further Thoughts

Then compare what he says after some actual use to the love-fest he and his new web partner slapped up before the XT-1 was actually released, based on a few hours' of limited, narrow-scope use by...people who work for one of Canada's largest camera sellers...

The thing about buying a new camera is that it's becoming more and more difficult to separate utter B.S. from real, solid, useful information. But as far as FF digital with ISO and shutter speed DIALS....ummmmm...that control ethos is basically almost dead, and has been for a loooooong, long time....since Ronald Reagan was president...that control ethos was DEAD BEFORE the first digital cameras hit the streets!!!! it has a niche appeal, and FUji seems to have the neatest, simplest implementation of it--but--read Reichmann's comments about how, now that he is used to the way a d-slr operates, he is not really fully happy with the way the XT-1 actually SHOOTS in the field! I myself could live with its quirks, but he's one of those multi-millionaire rich guy types who wants everything to be just so, no matter how it's actually made.

He writes: "The Limitations of Manual Controls

But, as the saying goes, be careful what you wish for. It wasn't long after the first blush of passion had passed that I realized that this oh-so-desirable design had a dark side. The camera has no customization settings for shooting modes. This means that when you want to quickly change from one type of shooting to another, every applicable control has to be individually altered. Let me explain>SNIP"

# 2 - we understand your criteria.
The thing that dSLRs don't have, except for the Nikon Df, is the neat looking dials with all of the selections etched on them. All the other features exist in all the other cameras EXCEPT not EXACTLY as you described because they don't have the specific gadgetry layout of the X-T1.

And if you used a dSLR with a touchscreen then you should look at cameras a little higher (such as Nikon d7000/d7100, d300, d700, d800, etc), as you'll find those same features just in a different layout.

Read this carefully you will find you have to use very extreme settings which you would probably never use
Sony A7 light leak, final verdict: not a problem for 99.9+% of photographers
