You saw my planters well now the have gone mad, this after the first crop, wrong wat round but a after and a before

My wife said we had one of these years ago but I don't remember. Found it at a new plant shop in the area -- it's called a Mexican Petunia (Ruellia). So I planted it a month ago and it's driving me totally nuts. I took this photo this morning out for a walk. The plant has about 30 blooms on it in this photo. By 5:00 pm this afternoon it will drop all those flowers -- every last one. They'll be strewn around on the ground. Then tomorrow morning it will bloom again with another 30 flowers and do the same thing again -- every day for a month now! Where the bleep is it getting the energy to do that!!!

Petunia blooms don’t last long in my experience, and they produce a lot of new blooms so it definitely fits the petunia model lol. But that is taking it to the extreme.

Lots of updates to share today! Thought my irises got frost bite and weren’t going to bloom but they are just a bit late this year.

First time this purple milkweed has blossomed. I planted it last year and it disappeared among the weeds and cosmo chaos of my first year butterfly garden. I thought it was lost but it popped up this year.

Today was deadhead day. The first round of blooms on my knockout roses are starting to fade. Going to feed them tonight so I wanted to take off as many fading blooms as I could.

Very excited to spot several black swallowtail caterpillars on my fennel and parsley plants. This is the reason I started these seeds so I’m happy to let the cats eat all of it! They’re first instar stage right now. Maybe a bit smaller than a grain of cooked rice. Got to get out there with a macro lens soon instead of just my iPhone.

Used the phone for these, pano of the whole veg patch and the harvest of the summer carrots and leaks.

Left to right on the veggies, green beans and some sunflowers mixed in. the empty row has just been planted in okra, was the summer broccoli, then the broccolini, harvest has just started on those. Then another variety of green beans, hidden behind that is a row of sunflowers and on the pallet fence are hanging pots of red, pink and white begonias. Then 4 varieties of tomatoes, in front of those are cucumbers, cantaloupe, squash and a different type cucumber. The soaker hose is another row of fresh planted okra and a border of zinnias doing nicely. And on the far right the giant butterfly bush that is desperate need of a trim.

I think I need to learn to identify the caterpillars better. I can't tell them apart!

I know it's a swallowtail but not sure if black or pipevine or one of the others... I only know what it is because we saw the butterfly over by the plants and I know some swallowtails use parsley and fennel for host plants.

Summer color starting to pop.

False snapdragons made a comeback after the bunnies nibbled them down to sticks.

Black swallowtail caterpillars love the dill and bronze fennel planted just for them. We call 'em "Jeffs" after Jeff the giant subway worm in "Men in Black II."

So, this is my first summer in the new house, and I let everything come up that wanted to come up so I could see what I have. There are a few things I'd like to change - way too many hosta plants crowding out precious space, for example. And in order to get the side yard berm installed, I transplanted several daylillies, just didn't know what they'd be.

Tiger daylillies! Just starting to open:

And - can anyone identify these two things? They're lovely!

And this guy's a mystery, too - maybe a more mature version of the other white one?

Those are Astilbe. Butterflies like it. They like some shade.

Thank you! I've never heard of them. They're planted in some shade, but endangered because of their location.

Here's the garage when we bought the place. One-car garage door, single lane driveway. I took this shot during the home inspection, May of 2022 - you can see the astilbe under the window.

We had to put in a new roof, and since the garage is actually large enough to be a two-car, we removed the cute little window and put it along the side, and cut for a double door.

Here's how it looks now (still waiting for new paint). I took this earlier in the spring when the Mallards were visiting each day.

See those hostas in the front? These pretty Astilbe are coming up behind them. Eventually we're going to extend the driveway to match the garage door.

I'm probably going to transplant the astilbe. Don't care as much about the hostas. There's also a small tree stump hidden in there that has to be ground, and we've removed that large pine tree (it was half dead) that shows to the right in the first picture.

I’m not crazy about hostas either. Everyone is always trying to give them away on our community garden page . The astilbe have corms so I think you could easily move them. If they don’t survive the move, Costco has them every spring in their garden section 6 corms for $9 this year if I’m remembering correctly. It’s sometimes called false goatsbeard. The pink is definitely astilbe. The white could be actual goatsbeard or astilbe. I don’t know what the differences are but maybe worth identifying correctly before digging.
