I had 3 no shows out of the 41 dahlia tubers I ended up planting (25 varieties). I dug around today and found that those tubers had rotted and the bugs were feasting. I guess we had more rain than expected while I was traveling. Fortunately on lost 3. Thankfully, I had held onto a few of the extras I stored over the winter. Just filled in those spots. Hopefully they’ll catch up to the others quickly. Once it gets hot and I have to start watering, if they’re not sprouted with roots the replacements will rot as well.

A few more of the roses looking awesome now that I weeded and mulched the front beds. Some snap dragons that reseeded in front as well. The really big one I think may have survived our mild winter. It’s a beast!

And the peonies are popping!

White Climbing Rose

Saturday morning at the family ruin spent reclaiming parts of some long-neglected grass-choked beds.
Pissed off that the city killed around $500 worth of young shrubs along a laneway fence line with road salt
spewed into the beds last winter. Nice...

Happier news is this pretty climber, one of our "rescue" roses transplanted 2 years ago. This one only blooms on new wood, so no roses till this year but worth the wait. Bonus Nelly Moser clematis, too!

Have you thought about a rock border to keep all the mulch in?

It’s a honeysuckle. A cultivar called “Scentsation”.

In the wildflower garden, sunflowers are poppying blossoms everywhere.

Some of my plants will need to be divided or moved next year. They are huge!

Butterfly bush - only year 2 and it’s almost 6’ tall and about 4’ wide. I didn’t prune it back at all this year and it never went dormant - had leaves all winter. It’s a beast! Will probably move this one after it flowers.

Cone flowers that I winter sowed and planted last year that didn’t flower. They are giant and the leaves are humongous. Finally got some buds on them.

Shasta daisies. More from the winter sowing project. No flowers last year but absolutely covered in buds right now. These will need to be divided and half given away. They are shading out my coral bells and the climbing bean behind them.

Pink hydrangea. Absolutely covered in buds. Last year this was hidden by some zinnias so I gave it some space this year.

Another hydrangea. This one is blue. It rarely flowered until I moved it to this protected spot last year. Now it’s happy.

This astilbe was planted last year and it’s so tall. I didn’t expect that. It’s got a lot of flower stalks on it. I think it’s a pink color but can’t remember. It may need to be divided after this year.
