Still clearing out invasives at the family ruin. They're a PITA since they overgrow new plantings and struggling wanted stuff. Caught ill-informed, unwelcome crap from snoopy neighbors today who consider any trimming, pruning or removal of squirrel plants, buckthorn, or Norway maples to be sacrilegious. My strategy is to ignore 'em and pour myself a double when done. Thankfully, my late, sainted MIL's single malt trove is still deep.

Why grow bags instead of pots if you’re worried about them drying out? I use grow bags for some of my dahlias but mostly because it makes it easier to “dog” them up in the fall. In summer I need to water them every day. One of the growers in my dahlia club puts her grow bags in a kiddie pool to help keep them watered. Not an attractive look but effective.
15 gallon pots are currently out of my budget range, those things are expensive. Even pots need watered daily here, so it won't be much additional work.

BTW, with the demise of shorthand in the office, Gregg went into gardening... you might be as old as me if you get the reference... 😂
I'm old, but I don’t get the reference. :(

Gregg Shorthand was a phonetic writing system invented by a guy named Gregg to make taking notes and dictation easier for Administrative Assistants to get the information down without the speaker having to slow down to wait for the AA to write everything in long hand. One of the flowers that I am planning on for next year is Gregg's Mistflower, hence the weak joke... I never learned it, but my LW learned it at Canon's Business College in HI back in the day.

Okay - thanks for the clarification! I do recall shorthand, but I paid little attention to how it came into being. It was widely used for a few decades, wasn't it? And apparently still taught in the not-too-distant past. If you weren't taught how to read/write it, it wasn't easily deciphered.

...and yeah, you were reaching with that flower reference.

Most of the dahlias survived the frost warning while I was away and the nor’easter which brought 4” of rain and wind gusts of 40 mph. I spent some time yesterday re-staking the survivors because there is no frost in the forecast for the next 10 days. Some of my dahlias are over 9’ tall this late in the season so they’re floppy.

Clematis are having a rebloom after being cut back to the ground in summer.

Brat. Your Major Wheeler has become the stuff of legends!

Everything looks really good - we had an extended summer, too and things have hung on surprisingly well. The nights have gotten chillier and we've had one official frost. Everything that's not in a pot is done for. Your dahlias are amazing - are they usually this tall? They may have scraggly stalks but the flowers are immaculate!

Not much left for me to do in my garden than clean up along the berm, and then one by one start emptying my potted flowers as the fade away.

I've brought in all my herbs. They'll do well for awhile; it's bright in there.

I think I lucked into perfect placement for the Major!

I think this is the tallest that the dahlias have ever been. I would prefer they were shorter and a bit bushier but the blooms started so late this year that I probably waited too long to switch from a foliage fertilizer to a bloom booster.

I used Fox Farm Grow Big this year because the price of the Neptune’s Fish Emulsion went up quite a bit.

A half dozen frosts polished off what wasn't already bedraggled and pulled. Who needs pix of store-bought mums! That's about all that's left. Finished overhauling the snowblowers here and at the family ruin. Strategizing next year's annuals from seed projects. Jealous of those blooms!
