This is probably my 4th “last dahlia bouquet of the season”. But we haven’t had a frost yet and several of my plants are still pumping out the blooms! I’m loving the extended season but at this point I’m going to have to cut them all back by the end of this week if the temps don’t get them. I don’t want to be out there digging and washing tubers once the real cold sets in for the winter! They really need to stay in the ground for 1-2 weeks after being cut back so I’m already looking at mid November….

That's such a hard call, to have to cut them back based on the time of season when they're still putting out blooms like this! They're incredibly prolific this year. They look amazing!

I can brag that my Major Wheeler has put out a couple more blooms in the past week - lots of sunshine and no hard frosts yet. I'm watching them just for fun since they're not really opening up. Very interested to see what happens next year.

Everything else out there is pretty much spent.

So pretty. Keep thinking a shower curtain plastered with these beauties would kill the winter blues!
We're done. Half dozen killing frosts have flattened survivors. Been recycling potting soil tonnage. Was presented with an English "riddle" sifter that strained out roots, twigs, bark and assorted crud. Felt like an archeological dig looking for Egyptian molars. The Brit clan is big on Spears and Jackson garden tools--a bit pricey but bomb-proof. Got 6 big storage boxes full and may go for more, time permitting. Gets used for flowers, spuds, and tomatoes.

Went to get some broccoli and such to plant today, but none of the big box stores has any. Will try the local farmers co-op tomorrow, they usually have someone selling plants.

If it seems early, our red maples have blossomed and the honeybees are building up now, so that's the sign I should have had plants in already.

Still mostly snow covered here but I have noticed the trees have a ton of buds and even some of the crocuses are poking through where the snow has melted.

Nothing poking through the ground here yet - still a tad too early.

I prefer to watch what the critters are doing, too. I know we're getting closer because I've seen the Canada geese around, and also the mourning doves have started to coo again. They go silent in the dead of winter.

Come on, spring!

I haven't seen any buds on the trees and we've had snow on the ground since December and looking for more tonight. Heading south late next week so maybe there's something coming up or out at MLSIL's place.

We’re expecting 1-3” tonight. A very snowy winter here when compared to the past few years!

75F right now, and nothing to plant and the garden is still too wet to till up. Even the burn pile is too soaked to have a bon fire, geeze.

I guess if I want some entertainment, I'll have to join the other old hippies tonight and drink beer and eat tacos. lol

Fortunately, we're dodging that storm for the most part. Flurries, windy and cold again - but nothing past an inch or so and it's going to warm up again by the middle of next week.

That's also a wonderful use of your time! 🍺 Have fun!

I think the polar cycle is playing into that, like 2009/2010. IDR the cycle period.

We got the full 3”. Threw my back out putting my socks on - but probably because I overtaxed it earlier clearing cars and driveway! We’re expecting another 20”+ tomorrow night. They’re calling it a blizzard 😲😲😲. I’m not surprised or scared, just tired.

Holy crap! That definitely sounds like a blizzard. It's snowing lightly here right now, but we're only expecting about 3" total over the next few days. Then it's supposed to warm up again and rain.

Stay safe! ❄️
