What's new

Gardeners! Share your garden photos and garden chatter here.

It got to 83F/28C today. The Redbuds are popping everywhere and the Mountain Cedar is making my eyes itch like mother nature threw itching powder in my face. This weekend I'll actually get to go out and start the work with the planters back up to get them ready for when the plants and veggies are available and we are safely out of reach of a sneak frost coming down from Canada to exact revenge for Team USA hockey...

Finally got my winter sowing done today. I have had to wait for the snow to start melting as my bag of soil and all of my containers were buried under 3’ of snow for the past few months.

Planted basil, dill, parsley, snap dragons, butterfly weed and gomphrena… Will try to add a few more next week but not sure what yet. I have sweet pea, zinnia and poppy seeds but I think I’ll direct sow those like I’ve done in the past.

Ever try seed stratification? Ongoing experiment along with winter sowing this season. Going for perennial expansion at the family ruin.

What do you mean by seed stratification? Putting them in the fridge/freezer?

MLW and Lazy Lobster picked up some seeds last week. I don't recall exactly what but I think there were pepper and tomato packs in the bunch. LL will start them inside, then transfer to the deck boxes once the frosts are done.

Too early but seems the plants say spring has sprung. Daffodils, Lenten Rose, Blueberries and Red Trillium all popping out biggly. (Sorry about the crappy cell phone pics.)

I’ve been trying to add more green to my place too, and picking from indoor plants has made it a lot easier for me. I liked that the shop groups things by size and care level, so I didn’t accidentally pick a diva plant. The care guides were handy, and the express delivery saved me from staring at empty pots for ages.

Moved a young jackmanii clematis today that I just planted 2 years ago. I was surprised to see buds already forming on the old wood. The snow just melted yesterday! I cut the stems down to 12” and then I dug it up. Hopefully the shock of the move and my pruning those early buds doesn’t cost me my blooms this year. But it had to be done. She needed a higher trellis to climb. I spend a lot of time fixing my “mistakes” and satisfying my garden whims… Plans change. Gardens evolve. I’m fickle.

Here she is in her old spot last year. I just moved her to the left away from the windows so I can add a tall trellis. .

There is no "soil" here as most understand it; it's all clay and cinders, so we use raised beds for gardening. Originally, I built the beds using plywood, which doesn't hold up very well, but it worked for about 19 years. Over the winter, we replaced all but the last bed with metal. We experimented with one cinder block version, then a rectangular one, and finally settled on the ovals. This is what they looked like about five years ago in June, and this morning as we get ready for a new season. Joanne already has peppers planted.

You did the right thing - this baby certainly needed more height - and those blooms looked heavy last year! Crossing my fingers for you that you don't lose any blooms over it. It's pretty early so you might be fine. :)

I love raised beds - they look easier to work on. These metal ones look great, and I like the oval shapes!

I'd say you got pretty good mileage out of those plywood originals. :thumbyo:

I plant the majority of my dahlias in metal raised beds. I have two 4x3 beds, three 2x4 beds and one 3x6 bed right now and plan to add a 1-2 more this spring. I highly recommend. They were very affordable and not too too challenging to put together on my own. I’m still working on planting low growing perennials in front of them for a more cottage garden look.

More spring flowers from the backyard.
