Gas Works Moon Panorama

Where's the reflection of the moon?

Also, the moon is not in that orientation when it's that close to the horizon. I can see where you edited it in.

Wow...good eye. How do you mean about the orientation close to the horizon?

To clarify, that was the actual moon on that actual night, but it was more to left and a bit behind me...

The moon is shown as it would appear to someone looking at it when it's near the observer's meridian (due south). If the moon is rising in this image, it should be rotated counter-clockwise. If it's setting, it needs to rotate clockwise.

The visual effect is called field rotation. When the moon rises in the east, it's western limb is 'down'. When it sets, it's eastern limb is 'down'. Visually, the moon appears to rotate clockwise to observers in the northern hemisphere, and ccw to those south of the equator.

Interesting. Learn something new every day!

I launched my astro program and centered the moon on my screen. I sped up the time advance to 3000x normal speed. If you looked at the moon between moonrise and moonset tonight, this is what you would see.

Field Rotation - YouTube

For some reason, management has decided not to allow embedding youtube links any more.

It's not due to the rotation of the moon.... it's due to the rotation of the earth, and the fact you yourself are rotating your body on the surface of the earth during this selestial ballet.
