GBH in a Fir

Very nice. I like the first one best of the bunch. I am curious as to whether or not you used a bit of fill flash, or was the sun behind you?

I am familiar with some of their "hangouts, so I am wondering where on the island did you find this one at this time of year?

Sun was perfect - behind me and quite low. The last one was after the low cloud started to move back in. These were taken at Ladysmith waterfront. There is a small rookery only a short distance away where they will gather to nest in the early spring. There has been as many as three hanging out here for the last 8 or 10 days.
Thanks Brian, I will have to visit it the next time I am on the Island. I did know about the rookery in Beacon Hill Park and I have photographed GBHs in the Esquimalt Lagoon in the spring, but I didn't know about Ladysmith.

I think they actually nest in trees but we seem to only 'see' them in water.
I wondered also if you used a flash, so great lighting from the sun!
I hope they stick around for you.

Yes. They nest in colonies in trees. The biggest colony I've seen had 10 - 15 active nests per year. I'd like to back there with a camera. Maybe this spring.:1219:
