Anyone have any recommendations for a decent general use lens? Im looking for something in the 24mm-70mm range but not looking for pro line glass. Just something that will cover FF, new or old, non-prime, and not anything too expensive. Its use would be a bit of street shooting (why I would like something fairly wide like 24mm) and for walks/hikes with the wife.

Its for a Nikon D600

I started out with the kit 24-85, and found the 85 too short. After upping to the 24-120, I still found the 120 too short. I now sport a 28-300. I'd much rather have it be 24-250, but Nikon couldn't care less about me.

I pink sparkly heart love my 28-105 3.5-4.5 af-d. Useful focal range, nice and sharp, and has a bonus 1/2 macro focusing limiter that is super handy as a walk around lens. Very inexpensive to boot! I think I paid $160 from keh in like new condition. It does deal with more lens flare than my 50mm but I work around it and it's not nearly as bad as my 150.

Another vote for the Nikon 24-85mm 3.5-4.5 VR
This is the D600/D610 kit lens.
Its not expensive, very sharp, light weight.
I owned it and used it as my go to lens for a long time, I did replace it with the Nikon 24-70mm but the 24-85mm was a good lens, if you dont need fast glass this is an excellent lens.

I use a 28-85 f3.5-4.5 AF on my D90 and F5. Surprisingly under rated lens. Sharp and focus is fast if the camera is. And your D600 is.

I have a 24-85. And actually the 28-300 is on my list to get, albeit it is a costly lens. I've had plenty of instances where I could have used the 28 and 300 at the same event (without taking 2 cameras).

24-120mm f/4 AF-S VR?

Nice lens but much more than Id like to spend. I was thinking of just a few hundred dollars at most

Are you open to legacy lenses?

Nikkor AF 35-70mm f/2.8D ED is not expensive these days (just a few hundred U$), and is a pro level lens from the 1990s. All metal construction and constant f/2.8.

I'm picking up the 24-120 f/4 VR soon and I have a funny feeling that its going to be an awesome walk around lens.

I also have the 24-85 VR which I am selling by the way. That is also a great walk around lens.

For $300, I think the 24-85 VR is your best option.
