Getting a reflection when shooting the moon

Hey everyone,

I was trying to shoot the moon last night and I kept getting a reflection of the moon in the shot... I seen it in the view finder also...

Can someone tell me why this is happening?

Yes, a UV filter.. Is that the culprit?

Remove the UV filter and try it again. I am pretty sure that was the issue.

UV filters are useless and only degrade image quality. BTW, you need to get that shutterspeed up for moon shots.

In the event of an accident I'd much rather shatter my uv filter than my lens....

You haven't seen how much damage that shards of a UV filter can do to a lens, have you? lol! If you keep a hood on like you should.. never a problem, as long as you don't throw your gear around. You would be amazed how much a UV filter can degrade your IQ.. especially a cheap one!

Mmm no I haven't! I've read a lot about this and I always get two versions... I figured my lens was safer that way... Perhaps I'll take a leap of faith and remove it eventually

Or how much abuse a lens can take without really affecting IQ.

If you really can't part with your UV filter, then I would suggest a heliopan or Schneider/BW filter. Often times people will throw on a cruddy, $12 Hoya in front of a $1200 lens.

What you see there is known as lens flare. It is a reflection internal to the lens. Adding a UV filter also adds an air gap, and air gaps tend to promote lens flare.

With a bright light source in the image frame, you may still get some lens flare even without a UV filter on the lens, from air gaps in lens element groups in the lens.
Quality filters and lenses ($$$'s) have coatings on the glass that help minimize lens flare. If your UV filter or lens were inexpensive, part of what you give up for low cost is lens flare control.

Still, it makes for an interesting picture, if you're not focused on displaying the moon "as seen".
