I think I'm starting to get better at panning! Took this yesterday with my D80+50 1.8 @iso 100, f/10, 1/125th.

How fast was he going?

He was ripping out of a corner. Probably 20-25mph. Not flying. But I was also only about 15-20 feet away from him. I found a few better examples from the shoot. I'll post them in a few.

You should be getting them in the corner because they are a bit boring whem crossers are i a straight line

Hence the pan. The younger riders like this one look the same in corners as they do in straights.

Only the experts produce good looking photos in the corners, and even then, only if the track is too muddy or too dry. When the moisture level in the dirt is right, you don't even get much of a roost, and they don't lay the bikes over very far.

Yep, that looks pretty damn good!

How many tries did that take?

I like the shot. My original comment was based on my experience in having trouble panning when they weren't moving very fast. I could get the subject in decent focus but when they were moving a bit slow the background was never that blurry for my taste.

Good capture.

I'd say out of 50 tries, 30 were usable, and 10 or 15 were this good.

Well it's a whole lot better than what I used to get. Can't say how it compares to other shooters though.

Panning works best with a slower shutter speed and wider aperture. It's much harder but, the results are better. Good pic all in all, though.

Well since I don't own an nd filter, that wasn't an option. And and slower a shutter speed, and the up and down motion of the bike over rough terrain started to appear.
