My wife has done long and short. The short tends to give a more playful kind of look while the longer is more glamorous and beautiful. I always like the longer better but she has fun with it when it's short. It's just painful to go from short back to long because there's about a 3-6 month window where it's in between and it's hard to style.

Short was also less maintenance.

Asking mostly dudes about female hair options? This is not going to end well... hahaha :D

I'm probably the wrong woman to respond to this, but I'll add my two cents. :-) I'm not a fan of any, but only because I don't like any hair style that's long enough to constantly fall out in my face. Short to the ears cuts are my favorites. No muss, no fuss, wash, towel dry, finger comb, and go. :-)

It's really too bad you can't just go to a shop and the technician makes the best suggestion. Unfortunately, they don't teach that in hair-cutting school.

In fact, they apparently don't even teach proper hair cutting in hair-cutting school. Many times wifey has returned from the local hair-cutting place and I end up fixing the bad haircut that she paid dearly for and left a tip to boot.

Yes, I can do a really good haircut, but wifey keeps trying the hair-cutting shops, hoping to find someone who actually knows how to cut hair.

Okay, well I'm also not really the best for hair advice--after all, look at what MINE does!
<<<<<<<<<< LOL

Seriously, I'm one of those women who just doesn't care much about all the typical "girly" stuff. My last haircut was right at a year ago--before that? I hadn't had it cut in FIVE years! Not even trimmed!

My two top picks have pretty much been eliminated; I liked the first one and the middle one, but someone said the first takes a lot of effort to maintain, and the middle requires more hair volume than it sounds like you have.
Do you have any good beauty schools near you? I use the Aveda Institute and the first time I went I just asked their advice on a style that would look good on me and work well for my facial structure, maintenance requirements, etc.

8 or 9, though the only difference I see is that 9 is a tad shorter. I also tend to only get my hair cut about once a year and it is long, straight and very fine and won't do anything but hang there. I keep thinking of hacking it all off but my Mom always made me keep my hair very short as a kid since she "doesn't believe in long hair" so now I always keep it long.
Before my grandmother passed away in 2001, I had only ever let my hair grow long ONCE. She hated it, said my face was too thin and small for long hair. I hated it too, because back then my hair was still really thick and much brighter red--with a little humidity, it would start "poofing" out and I'd end up looking like Ronald McDonald in street clothes. :Clown:
After she died, I grew it long again. Not because she wasn't around, but because by that time my mother could no longer see that well to cut it (yes, my mother cut my hair, and yes, I was 40 years old at the time!! At that point, I'd only had ONE "professional" haircut in my adult life, when I got married).
I found that the volume had thinned enough that it no longer tends to do its Ronald McD thing, plus time (and calories) have lent a little more "weight" to my facial structure, so I liked it better. Kept it long for the next decade plus.

Me too! I'm back to shorter hair now, and love it! Wash it, towel it dry (you do NOT want to see what a blow dryer does to these curls!! lol), scrunch it up a few times and I'm good to go.

They do at the really GOOD schools. We have an Aveda Institute here and it has changed the way I view Beauty Schools! They really do teach every aspect of hair cutting and styling.

I cut my hair over the holidays, seriously cut this time. It is just getting over the shock, so maybe some photos soon.

Thanks so much for responding!

I've been trying for years to get my DH to cut my hair. H e does his own and both the boys. He will not agree to it though. *sigh*
I get my haircut about once a year, so I've always asked for something that will grow out nice. I've done this for 5-7 years now and I guess I'm just ready to spice things up. The kids are older so I have a LITTLE more time to pretend I care what my hair looks like. And it's long enough to donate to locks of love, so it's for a good cause!

Some other ladies I asked said the first isn't that bad to maintain and that I can just run a straight iron through it. So I may give it a shot. Worst that happens is I hate maintaining it and I let it grow back rigght????

!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

You've certainly got MY attention. Can't wait to see THAT!
My brother once got his hair cut really, really short, AND shaved off his beard and mustache, after many years of wearing long hair.
He took pictures, standing with my sister. When my sister showed the pictures to my mom, mom asked her if the guy was a new boyfriend. His own mother didn't recognize him!!

The last time I had my hair long I was in high school [70's] and I let it grow long because someone told me that doing so would pull the natural curl out of it -wrong!! It was below my waist and looked like a rat's nest! When I finally got it cut ~boing~ one big curly mess! Still looked like I had stuck my head into an electric fan! I started going to a barber after that because it was the only place t hey would cut my hair as truly short as I wanted it, and short is the only way it doesn't look like a perm gone wrong. My bangs when I had them, always curled up like ski shoots! I'd use that goopy stuff called dipity do and tape them down and leave them that way for hours. I'd take the tape off and ~Boing~ up they'd go. When someone says to me "Oh you are so lucky to have naturally curly hair", I wish I did." my response to them is, no you wouldn't - you can curl or not curl straight hair, if you have curly hair, its a mess no matter what you do with it.
