Going back to school!! OMG...

I'm doin' it! I'm going back to school (distance learning) for Small Business/Entrepreneur starting the spring semester. :mrgreen:

I've been thinking around this for a long time now, how the heck to get this whole photography business started and started right to give me the best chance at success. After going in circles chasing ducks for way too long I've come to the realization I don't have all of the knowledge needed to do it and the only way to get that is going back to school.

I'm a little scared and a lot excited and had to share! Wish me luck!!

Congratulations!

Be ready to work hard. The school part isn't really that hard, but learning online really is. I've taken a few classes online, but I always prefer a real classroom. The more technical the class is, the harder it is to learn online.

Keep your goal for a small business in mind from day 1. Business degrees can be great, but they're becoming almost as worthless as art degrees in terms of getting a job. But it can give you valuable tools if you keep the end goal in mind.

Congrats! This is something you want to do, so your interest level will help you do great. It's not like having algebra forced upon you, which is simply cruel. :mrgreen:

Tiller, thanks so much for your thoughts! This won't be an actual business degree but rather focused on starting and/or running a small business, the entire course evolves around creating a business plan from day 1 so I will be able to focus on the ultimate goal with photography and come out the other end with a complete business plan

The big picture is:

Continue to actively use and learn flash.
Try my hand at people photography.
Business school.

It will take a couple years to complete it all (not that we are ever done learning) but I'm beyond relieved that I finally have an overall plan and have dug deeper into each part and feel good about where I'm headed

I've taken quite a few online courses (I mean, not just the YouTube and lynda.com stuff--actual university classes online) and I really love doing it, but then I love to study. Weird, I know. If I could have found someone to support my habit, I would have been a career student.

I've got friends my age who have gone back to school. REAL World School. One went back at about age 48 to get her degree in education and now teaches middle school, the other went back to school and got some kind of degree in Ultrasound technology. I keep toying with the idea myself, but I'd have to have more time to commit to it than I've got right now.

I know you'll do well, because you're motivated! Just take REALLY good notes, and then pass them on to me, please...

Good luck! Returning as an adult can be intimidating, that's for sure, but in my experience at least, it was much easier with some added life experience and "wisdom" (aka which beers to avoid for hangovers in the morning).
