GPS & WIFI on Cameras

Just how useful are these 2 features to you?

For me, I shoot, and transfer via SD card to my computer for processing - thus eliminating the need for wifi - I'm not going to upload direct to FB / Flickr / 500mp etc without checking it on the big screen.

Next up, this leads me to GPS - when I import from SD card, I create a folder in whatever app I use (Lightroom / Aperture / iPhoto etc) and separate the images by where / when. THIS eliminating the need for GPS.

So for me, I don't need my camera to have thee features.

I don't care for either option at all.
I do however, recognize them as popular features. I just have no use for them personally that i would feel that i needed them on my camera.

I do. I travel a lot for work. I just bought a gps for my D7000. I can't remember all the places I took every picture at. Wifi... Meh... I like the option to have it but I don't use it. Too slow compared to plugging the card or cam in to transfer files. GPS eats enough battery life from what I can tell on my D7000. Of course, I always have two batteries on me.

I'm when my D7000 finally croaks and I have to upgrade to the D7300 or whatever they call it, it will have it built in.

Sooooooooooooo many situations in life would be just incredibly better and more-satisfying if ONLY they had Wi-Fi around!!!

Like....bananas...imagine how fricking awesome bananas would be with Wi-Fi added!!!


And of course, family time spent on coastal waterways, crabbing with three generations, like with your father, and your oldest son and your teenage daughter, well, that kinda' thing sucks without Wi-Fi. Just sucks. But hey, guess what--coastal crabbing, now with Wi-Fi! Woo-hoo!!!!


And coming back into port after a day spent saltwater salmon angling for summer-run chinook in the Strait of Juan de Fuca..utterly SUCKS without WiFi.

I've often thought that I'd like WiFi on my DSLR just so I could get the photos on my phone to review them until I got a chance to sit down at the computer, transfer them off the card, and do some real editing. I've never wanted that badly enough to invest in an Eye-Fi card or anything though.

As far as GPS, nah, never really cared whether or not my photos were geotagged.

Everyone automatically goes right to the sharing and file transfer usage for wifi but the area I find it most useful for remote shooting. Sure you can buy a remote blah blah blah but I like using the wifi to remote shoot from my ipad and being able to see 100% coverage and change all the settings without touching the camera...especially during long exposure.

For me, I just don't feel the need for either on my camera. For some, I could see one or both being useful. Make mine a 6D lite and let me save another $300-500 on it. A full frame body for $1500, now we are talking.

I wouldn't mind Wifi persee depending on how it was setup, if it would let me just turn on the camera and then access it like a network drive to download the files to the computer, that would be nice. I have zero interest in connecting it directly to a cell phone for direct facebook/twitter/insert your social media favorite here - I post process my stuff prior to upload. As it is I just plug in the cable to the camera now so while it would save me maybe a full minute of my time honestly it's not a make or break feature for me personally.

GPS? Well like you when I download the stuff to the big 'puter I put them in folders marked by time and general location - so while GPS might be kind of cool from a strictly techno geeky standpoint I just don't see it as being a tremendously useful feature for me personally.

While not necessary. For the past few months, I've really been getting into Instagram as many of my photographer friends told me to get off my high horse and try enjoying this new democratized platform for image creation. And while, I do most of my Instagram shooting with just my phone, there has been times where I thought "if only I had a little more control" and on those moments I have wish my EM-5 had wifi (and focus peaking).

I'm starting to feel bad that I do not have the accessory GPS encoder unit and the Wi-Fi transmitter and the mobile Facebook application and the mobile phone-calling capabilities on my D3x. I also realllllly want the new Domino's instant-order verification pizza-ordering application too. And I'm reallly feeling bad that when I got to a bad restaurant, that I have to use another device besides my camera to write a negative review on Yelp.com. I want one device that connects me instantly, to everything,and everywhere,and everybody on the planet, because as we know, if you have to WAIT for ANYTHING, it's not worth chit. If you need to use a manufacturer's accessory to add unneeded features, you might as well just kill yourself. I mean, right? That's the right answer, isn't it?

Funny you mention that. I use the wifi on my gopro black for exactly that. I change settings without touching it. It makes changing positioning very easy because it's a 100% viewfinder. I guess when doing some astrophotography that just might be useful as well.
