Hope to be skilled enough to capture one in flight when I come back to Florida.

Nice set.
These guys will play havoc with your cameras exposure so try and adjust down a bit so you don't blow out the whites.

Unfortunately, lots of blown highlights. Tricky to get a mostly white bird with a mostly dark background without blowing out the highlights. It still happens, but I try to remember to expose towards the light or dark in the scene. For instance, fairly small white bird in the viewfinder against predominantly dark water in the background; then I move exposure compensation towards the majority. More dark/water than white subject, move EC towards the dark. It helps to keep the white bird from being blown out. Spot metering will help you from having to move the compensation too far left or right.

I have the raw files too, will check them when I get home.

I am usually always on at least -1EV or more on white birds unless the lighting is soft really soft.

Oh my, look way different on my desktop than phone... OK, did not have any raw files which is weird because I thought I was saving them as raw + jpeg. Anyway, are these better now?

I like #1. I try to get after Egrets on overcast days. I think yours are pretty close. A couple clipped spots maybe.

What are clipped spots?

Besides the blown highlights and for the most part they were blown almost all the way through to pure white which is virtually impossible to recover (though, I did try), there is significant color cast issues, all leaning toward over-saturated blues. I am not sure if this was a result of the exposure or if it came about as a result of some post production work.

This effort stretched just about every blown highlight trick I have in my repertoire of cheap and other sneaky Photoshop tricks. Unfortunately, even with all the sneaky tricks, there weren't enough to save the image...and so it goes.

Thanks for your efforts. I will use it as a learning experience. I appreciate the direction and have learned to compensate the exposure for white subjects using the unused (up to this point) EC button and move it in the - direction when shooting such subject. I also trust that using RAW will garner greater latitude in post.

I should mention, after reviewing notes, I tried the vivid color profile for about a dozen shots. The one you edited was one of them. I did abandon it as results were not to my liking.

nice shots, too bad about the highlights. i was taking photos of coots the other day.. almost every shot the coots bills were blow out to far to save it so i had to scrap them.. they were far away so on the small screen of my camera i could not really tell. once i got home and got the on the computer and cropped enough to get a good view of the bird i was like bummer.. i think about 2 of the shot turned out alright after i toned down the highlights and a a few other things..

anything that is pure white especially on a bright day you do generally need to adjust the exposure.. shooting in the snow can be the same way..

allot of times you need to take a shot or a few shots adjusting the exposure each time to make sure your image is exposed properly.. and hope what ever you want to shoo is still there. some times there is something i see that i need to get quck in a different spot that i am currently shooting so ill move the camera to that spot and fire off a few shots without having time to adjust my exposure for the new spot. well you just got to hope they turn out when you do that. the cameras light meter is only so good, it may work perfect in some lighting but there are allot of times when it wont work so well.

Will the histogram show me the blown highlights? It is on my list to study and understand it's use. I'm also wondering if I converted these to black and white would offer me a greater degree of editing on the blown highlights?
