Great Egret

well the histogram can come in handy but at other times it does not. lets say i am shooting a bright white or grey sky, my bird may be exposed properly but the histogram is gonna show the highlights are blow out big time since the sky in the photo is bright white. in your fist 2 photos you have a dark background but blow out highlights so you may get a funny reading on the histogram.. it will probably show low in the middle and super high on both ends on those photos you took.. so your histogram is going to read everything in the photo.. not just the bird. you may get a reading that is all out of whack due to a very light or very dark background but your bird may be perfectly exposed so you cant always go by those. you should learn about them for sure. its nice to know and at times can be a big help.. its pretty easy to understand IMO just do a google search and read about it and youll probably get the hang of how they say to read them quickly.

i dont do back and white photos usually but its something that you could try.. i would not expect that to be a much help though.. but you never know till you give it a go..
