In this photo, does the fact that we can't see the child's face detract from the photo? And are the things he's looking at detract from the photo, i.e. would a plain background be better or is it better to see where he's looking? Thanks. Just figuring out composition. Maybe I should crop out the annoying half bench to the right?

If you want a portrait, then not being able to see the lad's face is bad. If you want a nice picture of an interested lad, then it is fine.
