I was going to a local camera club meeting last night in my town and drove through a woody stretch where a new housing development was going up.

The sign gave the name, a brief description and then 'from the low 940's.'

Is there any conceivable situation where 940,000+ for a house is considered 'low'?

I don't think "the low 940's" means 940,000 is low cost, but rather, the houses cost closer to 940,000 than they do to 950,000 (i.e. 941,000 is the low 940's, where 949,000 would be the high 940's).

but I think it's odd that the sign would differentiate between the two, if you're already spending roughly 1mil on a house, what difference does a few thousand make? I see similar signs around here but they're advertising houses in something like the "low 150's", or "the low 200's" which is a price range that a few thousand can make a significant difference.

but hey, I guess those rich people didn't get rich by throwing money away, so if advertising the "low 940's" might sell a few extra houses, I can't blame 'em for trying it.

Yes, yes it has.

I was talking to a friend at work yesterday who told me that one of daughters of Bernie Ecclestone (who is the head of the Formula One Association, among other things) recently got married. Her and her husband bought a home somewhere in Europe that cost $90 million. They then flew to the USA and bought one in California for $80 million. By those standards the "Low $940's" is not even up to hovel standards.

Yup...Home prices are outrages. I process escrow and we have 1 bedroom CONDOS in Irvine, CA starting at $650,000..

I hear Detroit has some good deals.

has the world gone mad.

answer...

yes

we are due for a major crash that makes the last one look like a bumper dent.

Here in Oklahoma, Jaca's 400-K would be a very nice home. Something in the low 940's would get me a killer house AND a few acres.

400 k here i could buy the entire trailer park, lawn ornaments and all..

Drive to the coast and 400k will get you a shed. Drive 20 miles inland and 400k will get you a mansion.

Welcome to Maine!

Ps none of those people who own million dollar homes in the coast pay a lot of state taxes because they are considered vacation homes.

btw I can't even afford a 400k shack. I still rent. Once my 15 year old is out on his own, I may snag a camper shell and travel the continent taking froknowsfotos.

you aren't missing much. sometimes i wish i was a tenant. i own a place. But i don't want it. i never really wanted it. i really never wanted it to begin with i think. And when all my kids are done trashing it while growing up, ill probably max it out in leverage and let the bank foreclose on it. Because when they are grown, i have no purpose for it any longer really. why?

Because i never really wanted to buy it in the first place i don't think. Plus, by then, if it is still standing, the kids will have it totally wrecked. it is almost wrecked now. I used to think i would just give it to them. But by then, i don't think they will want it either. i want a shack on some land, maybe a boat. That's it. i don't even want a lawn to mow. How the hell i got stuck in cookie cutter property tax suburbia with a lawn to mow i couldn't tell ya. yah know, flowers by the walk, that kind of thing.

Town ordinances. lmao. suppose it is better than a coop but really. i actually refuse to mow the lawn. wife does it. hell with it let it grow i don't give a ****. it is like a strange version of hell. i cant even believe i actually pay for this. Just one big pile of more headaches. im tempted to tar the entire lawn. we got a cottage up north, no joke, still has a outhouse (though updated with modern plumbing and electrical). i think i would rather live there. no lawn there. just woods. i think most people, have this vision of moving up to a bigger house, four car garage. That kind of thing. screw that. i don't even want the one i have now. Lady down the street had this landscaping done, paver walkways trestle over deck. i wont deny more than once i just drove over the sidewalk and parked my truck right on the front lawn here. just because i wanted to.

i seal the driveways every couple years, entire time im swearing wishing it was dirt. Guess i shouldn't pave the lawn..Its it own version of hell, really. it is. i bought my first place i was drinking a cup of coffee at closing seeing it coming, i was 22 then more than 15 years ago. **** me, is all i could think. **** me. Even then. ill tell you my wife is one of them too, every year she is out planting flowers. she wont let me mow the lawn anyway she is afraid ill run them over. And i got to tell ya, this isn't even the worse. This is like crap but not the worst. in REAL cookie cutter tract home suburbia, i couldn't even imagine that.
