I had a "street person" demand my camera back when I was about 22 yrs old, as I was shooting some photos in a pretty seedy part of the city. He approached me and said, "Hey kid, give me that camera! Hand it over!"

I wrapped the strap around my right hand, really tightly, and told him, "This is a Nikon, and it's made of metal. If you come one step closer I am going to crack your f&&&&&g skull wide open with this camera!"

He said, "Oh, you wouldn't do that," and I said, "Why not? I got another one just like it at home. You want it? Come and get it!"

He backed off pretty quickly. Lucky for him, because I was pretty amped up on adrenaline, and I would have actually tried my hardest to make that heavy F3 + MD4 and eight-battery combo strike bone.

A tripod-mounted DSLR makes a formidable weapon as well.

I am fairly certain that my ex-wife was part of that gang. She kept the cam and gave me ..................... well, you know

I heard a story about a (small) female photographer in my area. Apparently she was shooting a wedding, in a very popular wedding location, with a lot of gear. Someone was watching her and followed her car when she left. They followed her and accosted her when she stopped, taking her gear.

I also saw a report on a news show, where they had security camera footage from hotels, where guys (dressed in nice suits) would sneak into wedding receptions and swipe unattended camera gear.

Never had an issue yet, but there are a few thing I do to try and thwart any possiblities. Dress down to an extent, certainly avoid the tourist look. Head up, chest out. Speak confidently and make eye contact with a nod of acknowledgement to their existence. But most importantly, you gotta have that swagger, you know, regardless of gender, you gotta...........

Sounds like not much trouble with cams being a target for street hold ups. I got a 645d with a 25 and it it adds up to some $. Sometimes a 2nd 645 in the back pack. Even the med high grade dslr and a fine lens can be $4000 to $6000 without much trouble. Guess the thieves don't follow cam values that much or there would be more robberies.
