Have you ever just left gear behind?

I don't think I've ever left anything behind, but I did accidentally leave my camera (rebel xt) on my back patio overnight and it poured. Somehow the camera and the lens were fine.

A small fold-up reflector set - left it at the Bronx zoo a couple of years ago.

I left a Canon 1D with a 300 2.8 sitting on a counter at the airport, it wasn't until I got to security a few minutes later that I realized it. I went back and it was still sitting there, my guess is that people think that no one could be that stupid to just leave a camera like that and walk away, which is why it was still there.

Ok, the REST OF YOU can follow the bunny... I'm following imagemaker46 around instead. :D

I also left a Leicaflex with a 21mm lens on the roof of my car once, I saw it hit the road in the rear view mirror. It had a small mark in one corner and that was it, just kept working, that wouldn't happen with today's throw away digital bodies.

Haven't left anything behind since I've had the DSLR; I used to set my Canon Powershots down all the time and then realize 15 minutes later I'd left them behind somewhere--did that about a dozen times on a trip to Disney World several years back, but every single time the camera was either right where I'd left it, or had been turned in to an employee.
But one Thanksgiving, I took it with me to our big family gathering at my cousin's house. I am, to this day, certain that I put it in a particular bag just before I left. The bag made it home with me, the camera did not. I never did find out what happened to it; my sister (who lives in the basement apartment on my cousin's farm) and my cousin looked around the house and yard but never found it, and it wasn't in anything that came home with me.

I was actually kinda glad, but it gave me the rationale to buy a new camera; just bought a newer Powershot, but it was way nicer than the one I lost.

My sister just recently left her camera bag sitting in the parking lot at her doctor's office. She drives a little Miata, and so in trying to fit something into the trunk (which she pretty much keeps stuffed to the gills), she pulled the camera bag out and set it down, planning to put it in the passenger seat instead. Finished re-arranging the trunk, closed it, got in the little car and drove off. Miraculously, she did not run over the bag (nor did anyone else) and someone from her doctor's office saw it almost immediately, brought it inside and called her to see if it was hers, (knowing she'd just left and that she did photography). Prompted me to put my contact information in my bag, just in case it ever gets separated from me and happens to get found by someone honest.

Also--not camera gear, but related equipment: I ran over a laptop and an external hard drive (at the same time). I was in intense pain about 2 a.m. one night and thought maybe I had appendicitis or kidney stones. So I decided to go to the ER (and yes, I was gonna drive myself even in pain, because I live alone and I'm bullheaded and not always that bright...and don't really think well at 2 a.m.). Knowing it could take hours, I grabbed my laptop bag to take with me. Got out to the car, put stuff in the trunk, then suddenly thought of something else I needed--never realized that I hadn't ever gotten the laptop case into the trunk, even when I first felt the car run over it--actually, I thought I'd just gotten a flat tire...so I pulled FORWARD, back up into the drive (and by so doing, running over the laptop case AGAIN, just for good measure) and got out to look at the tire. Amazingly, I was able to extract most of the data off the laptop's hard drive, even though the laptop was pretty mangled looking. The external drive had one tiny, tiny little dent on the outside case, but I've never been able to pull a thing off of it.

On tales of cars and things being left out one time when I was at school it was the end of term, so your typical madness (increased a lot more because there are 5 of us - plus one parent!) of packing up the car was rather rampant. However one item got left out and as we reversed up there was a terrible crunching sound!

The school violin in its case -- did not survive! However to this day it has retained a new use as being a source of artistic inspiration in the school art department (well least I know it spent a good few years in that capacity)

Left the ring for softbox few times (luckily in the studio). Had assistants who were loosing stuff. Just recently my regular assist. wasn't available, the person I had w/ me lost screw that fastens the camera to the bracket. It is the nuisance of replacing one and lack of responsibility that is annoying rather then the cost.

Perhaps they'd learn if you "accidentally" leave your assistant behind. :D

or left their paycheck behind.

I tried that. They know my pone number and know about *67 :)

Right now, there's only one guy that I'll work with, if he isn't available, I'll rather work by my self, at least I know my gear will be accounted for.

I'd keep hunting for more assistants - NYC must have loads of arts and photography students just waiting to get an assisting job and some of them will be reliable.

Doing a documentation job for work and had just shot an hour of video, went to change the tape, put new tape in camera left old tape on top of car. Drove off. Tape no more.

My tripod!! I leave that thing everywhere...lol I once was a hour into a hike and realized I didn't have it anymore. I had to back track the trail looking for it. Found it right at the beginning of the trail. Started the hike all over again. Or I lean it against the car while packing the rest of my stuff up and leave it there. When will I learn!! lol

I had few (I know, don't judge all by worst kind)... all from different schools, all wanted to learn photography (they found me, I didn't seek them out):
One guy shows up on a wedding in jeans, t-shirt, tripod and a camera. Perhaps I wasn't too clear when I said that standard uniform code is pants, shirt, tie (MUST Be if no jacket or vest). I really thought he was going to go into the bathroom and change.
Had a girl who met on the job w/ me (and mind you, I make very clear that the job of an assistant includes carrying gear from different room, setting things up, etc etc, NOT to shoot). This one was surprised that I ask her to carry bags.
Another one showed up with his girlfriend. He was very well dressed, well mannered, nice guy. However, he spend more time talking to his girlfriend then working.

Here's the kicker, in NYC, It is almost IMPOSSIBLE, to find an assistant for less then $15/hr (cash). Even ones w/o any experience, want $20/hr. (In 95, when I started assisting videographer, I was getting $35/7hrs and was saying THANK YOU). When I finally quit assisting (because I was already shooting for several years at that point), I was at $25/hr - but photographers who I was assisting knew that their assistant will make sure that job will be done and successful.

Me too with a bag of gear at a circus. Moved seats then ruished back 5 - 10 min later and luckily was still there.
