What's new

Haven't quite ironed out the wrinkles...

I wonder how much it costs to get over to Europe. I think it'd be cool to backpack around Europe. Lots of people do it, so I mean, I guess I probably won't die doing it.

Would you say it was worth it?

How long were you gone?

How did you make money?

Yes

3 years.

I worked.

Our brothers to the south haven't cornered the market on working in another country illegally.

Especially if you backpack through Europe or Australia there is always work for travelers, fruit picking, painting, bar tending, odd jobs.

The only hinderance is visa. Being an American most countries hose you when it comes to get a visa. Especially one that is legal for working for a short time.

My dual citizenship opened a lot of doors in that area.

In Oz I worked legally. In Europe I was illegal. But If you can swing a hammer, or pedal a bike with a delivery. you can find work in most major cities.

I suggest you rethink your budget. I left with 700$ and that just kept me a float for a short time till I could get some work.

Sell that mac tv you have!

I met a traveling photog in Big Sur California many years ago (10 or 12 years..), he is from the Czech Republic and at 6'5" he was quite able to take care of himself on the road. When Honza made it to my little beach town I put him up for a few days and we both ate all my earthquake food - top ramen noodles, peanut butter and crackers!

The guy is still traveling over 10 years latter and has built school houses in Bhutan and other admirable feats. We still stay in touch 2 or 3 times a year.

Maybe you could organize some destinations and do a bit of couch surfing? Or go to a very friendly country like Australia or New Zealand were traveling and meeting good people is pretty easy.

I might be way off here as I've never done this but I would try to make sure I always had enough money to get home. At least enough for the plane ticket.

If you're going to call me an idiot, at least use the right version of 'your', please. Actually, don't come in my thread to just bash me. Thanks.

I'll just drift around for a while.

Word of advice. some small towns don't like drifters... look what happened to John J Rambo. He was just passing through and wanted a bite to eat, but no, they had to "push" him didn't they? They drew first blood, not him! needless to say, John got very annoyed and it all ended up it tears.

basically, what i'm trying to say is go out and have fun while you're still young, but don't let a minor spat with a county sheriff escalate into the death of several officers and the total destruction of a small community.

I hope this helps. Good luck :)

I coulda killed them all... I could of killed you... in town your the law, out here its me... Dont push it. Dont push it or I'll give you a war you wont believe. Let it go.

 i was thinking the exact same thing the other night. Respectable movie, considering how bad they whored II and III just to make a buck. What do you expect though, the first was based on a novel... they should of let him die like he did in the novel. It would of been much more poetic.

Anyways, GOOD ADVICE!

 First Blood's a classic. the book is great. i think he kills more or less every character who appears in it, even the old guy with the dogs!

I've decided that I'm going to take a a couple of thousand dollars, catch a bus to Boston, fly out of Boston to London, and then just hang out doing oddjobs in London and then eventually move to France or something, or Germany, maybe pick grapes for wine in France for money, who knows. I'm gonna make sure that I have enough money to get back to Boston whenever I want though, in case I need to come home for something. I think that'd be a wise decision.

you might even be able to make one of the famous London meet-ups while you're there

HAHA, funny you mention that, I was thinking about it. I should compile a list of members in Europe, you know, in case I'm ever in their area, stop by, steal their couch and some food or something :p

i think there is a web site dedicated to helping travellers find a couch to sleep on. I can't remember what it was called. Maybe someone else will know. it could come in handy

As long as I don't get tied up and dressed in ass-less leather chaps, a couch to sleep on would be nice sometimes. Aren't there buildings in Europe that you can stay at for cheap, that are like, meant for traveling young adults? I learnt about them in French class but forget what they're called...
