having some trouble with manual flashes

I just got a whole bunch of older flashes on ebay for REAL cheap. They are all manual. I was planning on using them as off camera strobes. However, I can't quite figure out how to use them. Do i need to change settings on my camera to allow these flashes to be used in manual mode? Or do they just not work?
