HDR processing through gimp?

I don't have photoshop, I'm using gimp. I see tutorials on how to achieve HDR results through gimp. Is it possible to do this through gimp or not worth the time? Also are there free HDR processing programs?

Can't comment on how well it works because I haven't messed with it much, but I was led to LuminanceHDR.
