So last week Thursday some bastards came into my local nature reserve and pouched two of our beautiful rhinos for their horns, one was 30years old and the other 8 years old and to make it even worse the one was about to give birth soon, the bullet killed both mother and baby so we lost 3 of these majestic creatures, it is not long till all of them have been pouched down and become extinct. May you rest in peace

Terrible news :(
Sadly the Eastern market has such a high price on authentic horn that poachers area given. I know some regions are now almost giivng armed escort to some individuals all the time. I've also read that apparently over 400 rangers have been shot in Africa alone this year whilst working on reserves - although I think its also pushing more toward a rise in shoot-to-kill policies for rangers (from what I understand many are still rquired to make warning shots or demand surrender before being allowed to shoot).

How awful! Simply not fair. It saddens me when man destroys Creatures of the earth. Thank you for sharing the photo of such a beautiful animal.

Terrible news, I hear there are plans to export some rhino (black and white), to Australia to keep them away from the poachers. I have a thread around here (see below) where I posted a few shots of a rhino female with 2 bullet holes (private lodge in Kruger). She looked fine though, and the rangers were going to get her some treatment.

Great Photo and Very Sad.Some People just suck, they should catch them and pluck out there finger nails.

Terrible news thanks for sharing the photo is that a cattle egret next to the rhino

I know they changed the law to legalize the removing of rhino horn from 'private' animals to flood the market. I guess it has not really worked. As long as the price for rhino horn is higher than that of gold, you will unfortunately always find poor bastards who will risk their lives for very little money.

They need to get tough on the rich people who buy the product, lock them away and throw away the key.

I don't know if you have ever been to rietvlei nature reserve here in Pretoria side when you still stayed in SA. That's where this happened now. They where dehorned a few years back after I think they killed 5 of them. But recently the reserve has gone under new management if you know what I mean and there's no funds for anything, money is probably going straight into the pockets... They busy asking the public for donations but need R100 000 to dehorn the remaining rhinos. It so sad that you can't even see a rhino anymore that have their big horns..

That poor rhino shame, just shows you how strong of a animal they are. I'd like to see a stupid poacher go one on one without his gun. That's what they should actually do when they catch them is put them one on one and let them feel the pain

Bugger. .....:(

I can't believe that there are such stupid people, that will still buy this stuff!

As long as the market is there these animals will never be safe unfortunately which is truly sad. Us humans are destroying everything we can, and that will come and bite us in the rear one of these days

No I've not been. Holed up at the gas station on N1 and looked at a couple of ostrich and blesbok while passing though.

We trouble with hunters around here, most of them will shoot whatever they see just for fun, and then call it a "Sport". It drives me crazy! :(
