Hey guys. Is there a way to combat the convection currents you see coming off of water, across roads and up in trees? I had some shots i thought would be great across a marsh of a great egret but when i got home, there was nothing but heat visible and a less than sharp photo of the bird. What can I do if anything?

To my knowledge, nothing. Super telephotos magnify everything, including the convection currents.

Best you can do is shoot in the morning and evening when it's cooler and the light is better.

There is nothing you can really do other then shoot when it is cooler out or get close enough there are not to many heat waves

Cooler days, earlier mornings and getting closer are about your only realistic options sadly. It's a pain of wildlife photography, less commonly aired since it tends to get noticed more when you've higher end gear that lets you get sharp long distance shots (and once you've sunk several thousand into a single lens people "tend" to know to expect it so it doesn't get posted about as much).

Convection currents, a lot of pollen, slight haze, dust, fog, clouds ... they're all part of issues one has to take into consideration with photography. Many times you'll take a photo and then bin them, go back over and over again until it's a nice clear day.

It's easier/better to go in the evening after everything has burnt off during the day than early in the mornings where there may be a slight haze/fog over the water if you want to maximize your time. Over time you may become more crucial on weather, wind direction, etc etc as you'll find out when there's no wind there's a highly likelihood of haze off the water (no wind to blow it away), etc.
