I just ordered my first DSLR, a Nikon D40. I know it's an old model and all, but I got it for a really good price and it came with the 18-55 lens, 55-200mm vr lens, tripod, camera bag, and a 16GB memory card! I plan on upgrading by the end of the year when I know a little more about photography, which is why I joined this forum!

Welcome. I think it's a fine camera to learn on. Got mine last year for the same reasons. Lots of good info here.

If I had it to do over I'd do the following: 1. read the manual first

2. learn about the exposure triangle
3. understand white balance
4. understand the exposure meter so I could shoot in manual asap (it's more fun)

I will definitely read the manual. I don't know ANYTHING about stuff like this. I really can't wait to learn though. Just checked out camerasim.com and it's pretty fun just messing around with the ISO and stuff. Thanks man!
