Hello.

I'm going to US for Christmas and since prices are way cheaper over there, i'm thinking about buying a DSLR for me.

I've never owned a DSLR before, i'm a realll beginner in this area and my last camera was a point n shoot canon s90.

First of all, i wont be able to buy my stuff in BnH because im going to Miami.

The stores i've checked some prices are Tigerdirect, Bestbuy and WolfCamera.

They have basically all the same price, the difference is some kit bundles.

I've done some research already and so far my options are the following:

I- D90 body only 800$ + 18-70 lens 450$ + 55-200 VR lens 250$ = 1500$.

II- D90 kit with 18-105 + 55-200 VR = 1200$

III- T2i kit with 18-55 900$ + 55-250 IS lens 300$ = 1200$.

IV- D7000 kit with 18-105 lens = 1500$

What do you guys think?

Thank you very much!

I - seems very similar to II, but more expensive.
II - there is a lot of overlap in those two lenses...... but I own both, and they are good. Why you would pay $300 more for virtually the same stuff in I is beyond me..... (although I did like the 18-55 a little better than the 18-105). That extra $300 could be a nice prime lens. Or two.
III - I know nothing.
IV - I have one. I love it. I would recommend it.

V - really, only you can make this decision. The intratubes are full of fantastic information on all of these modes, as well as user testimony and professional reviews.

Also, with the exception of the D7000 (Everybody seems to be completely sold out for some reason...), I would think that you would be able to go fondle them at the store, and see which feel the best to you.

But will I be OK with a d7000 and only ONE 18-105 lens? Because, I dont intend to replace this body any time sooner or later. But at the same time I dont know if that one lens will be enough, comparing d7000 with d90 or t2i

Only you can answer that based on your usage and needs. My personal answer would be "no", but I remedied that by buying more lenses.

How would you be limited by the 18-105? With the answer to that question, decide what lenses you need. Remember that in the future it is going to be a lot less painful to upgrade the body than it will be to upgrade ALL your lenses.

Oh yeah, and to save you from having to discover this on your own..... This isn't a cheap hobby. FAR from it! One lens is never "enough". Nor is two....... or three....... or four...... :lmao:

I have no idea which lens I need..as I said in the first post, i've never used a DSLR.

But why would I need to upgrade all my lenses? Didnt get it.

Welcome to the forum and best wishes on your visit to the States.
Be aware that retail stores tend to sell out quickly and without notice around Christmas (this is intentional) and afterwards take quite abit of time to restock.
Regardless of what you are told or read today have your first pick, then a back up selection. Expect to possibly hunt around and negotiate prices (yes retailers will unload extras at lower than posted prices). Have a list of places, addresses and maps to those places. Hopefully you nail it the first time. Good Luck.
Sorry but I cant help with Nikon cameras, I use Canons.

If you buy cheap lenses you will eventually want to upgrade to better ones. In the world of lenses, buy once cry once seems to be the battle cry.

I guess what-if trying to say is that getting a whole bunch of cheap lenses and an expensive body from the get makes less sense than getting a cheaper body and one or two quality lenses. Also, if you don't know why you would be limited by not having multiple lenses, why would you need them? Personally, I would start with one lens, and fill in the gaps as they appear. This is my personal feeling....... please remember what you paid for that advice.

Thanks for the advices! As soon as Christmas is over I'll go to the stores I've checked. Hope they still have something.

But you consider the lenses I've talked about cheap? I wasnt intending to replace neither the body nor the lenses!

Me? No. I do not consider them cheap.

I also don't consider them to be uber high quality.

Please don't think I'm sticking my nose in the air though. I own all of the lenses you are talking about, and use them all the time. The problem is that now I'm kind of wishing that I would have held off on the 55-200 5.6 and saved up for a 200mm 2.8 or 80-200 2.8 instead. now when I finally buy one, it will have cost me $200 more because I bought the 55-200 first.

Just sayin.

Hmm ok, I got you. However, at the same time, I dont think I'll go that deep into those technicalities right now. If I have to spend 200$ after 1 or 2 years, fine. What I worry is right now.

Would the d90 with 18-105 + 55-200 be overlapping to much? Because if so, then ok, since it would be an obvious waste of money.

In that case I would go with d7000 or D90 with 18-70 + 55-200 or 18-105 + 70-300.

I would skip the 55-200 altogether... especially if you're getting the 18-105 kit lens, and spend about another hundred on a used (mint) 70-300 VR. Thats going to give you a much greater range of focal lengths to work with, and the 70-300 VR is quite sharp.

Ok ok.

So what do you think:

18-105 + 70-300

OR

18-70 + 55-200?

It will be the same price. Just gotta know which bundle is better.

18-105 + 70-300

Just because you get a nice all around walk around lens...

nothing against Nikons,But the canon's buttons are in simular positions on the point and shoot to the Dslr's, is there a reason your going for a nikon? :)

No, no particular reason.

I still havent chosen between t2i and the 2 nikons, but I want to clear my mind first about exactly what to buy in each case, later, when I get to the store, i'll choose them for real.
