So I've been looking at the 24-70 lens to buy. I'm pretty sure I'm going to get it. But..I remember somebody recommending me to get the 17-55. So I looked it up. Yes, it's cheaper, but is it worth getting? I went on the bh website, and they say "DX lenses are NOT recommended for FX cameras". Well, I have an FX camera. So does this mean, since having a DX lens on a full frame will make the focal length change? Would it even be worth getting the 17-55? I hear it's a great lens for weddings. I'm doing a wedding for a friend coming up in April, and this is the main reason why I'm investing in a new lens. Which would you choose, if you were in my shoes?

Hope these questions don't make me sound stupid. Just a simple question wanting a simple answer.

Thanks.

From what I understand, the DX lens would work on the FX body, but the image won't fall on the entire sensor, so the camera crops it down. Basically you'd be reducing your resolution.

So is it even worth looking at?

Have you read your D700 users manual yet? See page 59 and page 288 - Custom Settings menu a6.

When you mount a DX lens on your D700 it only uses the middle 5 MP or so of the image sensor, because DX lenses are designed fro crop sensor cameras and project an image circle smaller than the full size sensor in your camera.

Your D700 does not have a crop factor, so the FOV a certain focal length delivers on your D700 doesn't change between DX and FX lenses.
