help me decide on a DSLR

hey .. so i'm like super confused .. firstly is canon better than nikon. second, i'm looking to get a dslr and was thinking to get the nikon D3100 but then i'm getting recommended for the 550D or the D5100 .. does it make sense on spending a bit more now or should have invest the extra dough on some lenses? .. i'm a amateur photographer, looking to shoot nature/wildfire photography .. and the occasional food/portraits photography.

First, set yourself a price limit on how much you are willing to spend on a body + lens kit. Then determine if you have enough to buy an extra lens or maybe some accessories for it.

In regards to the Canon vs Nikon thing, get what ever you feel is better. Go into a shop and hold onto one, use one of them, see what you feel comfortable with. - Check out both the 550D and the D3100/5100 if these are what you're looking at.

If you are dead serious on photography, then spending a bit more now would make sense. Though if your just getting into it or are still a little unsure about what the future holds for you and photography, don't spend too much.
