There are RAW converters and then there are RAW converters. They are not all created equal. I haven't used ACDSee to convert RAW files so I can't say how well it works. I can say from experience that some of them are very, very poor. In other words take advantage of the trial and make sure what you are getting is worth the price.

You start the thread by saying you are a hobby photographer so my advice is to get what makes you happy. If you can see a benefit in investing money in Adobe then get it.

I am a minimalist and hate spending money on software so I tend to get a bit of software and stick to it. Paint Shop Pro 7 is 10 years old but suits me and I just had to get Photomatix as I love the overdone tonemapped look. I dont own any Adobe software but I get what I want out of my photography and I have no pretensions of selling any of my work. My whole workflow is based around Irfanview, a great free software for batch processing pics for use on the web.

Settle down and take your time to pick what software suits you.
