Help me please...

I need to understand what and how I should set my Camera ( canon T3I) I'm using a 50mm lens. Well here is my problem... I'm trying to shoot my 10 month old grandson, and as we all know their always on the move... How do I prevent "Blur" when Taking pic's of him. I know one option would be Tripod, but I was on the floor with him and tried my best to lock my arms to my side.. But I really think I need to understand "setting know how" if someone can dummy it down for me that would be fantastic!! Its my 1st week with DSLR. Thanks:mrgreen:

It'[s a lot to explain in a few sentences but basically you want to up your shutter speed. Doing this will make opening the aperture (causing other focus potential issues) and raising the ISO causing more grain. I recommend "Understanding Exposure" to get you started.

If you are really close to the subject, you will probably need 1/500 or faster for shutter speed if they are moving quickly. Switch the camera to manual and dial in that shutter speed and your desired aperature (the wider open the better since you have a fast shutter speed) and see what the light meter says. If it shows as underexposed, bump up the ISO a bit to compensate. You can probably bump the ISO on that camera to 800 or 1600 without TOO much noise.

Lisa, you can bump the ISO to 3200 with virtually no noise, 6400 will give you some noise in blacks, but that sensor, believe it or not, handles noise very well. Keep ISO on auto, shoot in shutter priority (Tv) and choose a shutter speed above 1/250 and you should be ok. If you need to shoot faster, you can probably get away with up to 1/1000 depending on light conditions.

The second one has a shutter speed of 1/10. That is too slow for handheld shots. Bump up the ISO a bit. You may be able to bump the aperture a little more wide open and not sacrifice the depth of field you are after. It will help blur the background more as well.

You shot those in aperture priority, which allows the shutter to go as slow as needed for proper exposure. Using shutter priority even at 1/125 you should see a significant improvement.

also, put your camera in burst mode, you just leave your finger on the shutter and fire away. That with a faster shutter speed should do the trick for you.
