I dont understand what project would need you to itemise specific makes and models of equipment you've bought when its purpose seems very vague,

"for someone who would mostly shout outdoors with moving subjects like birds or other wild animals, but could still use the camera and have it perform at least decently in other situations"

Photographic equipment in general is designed for specific situations, buying a lens that will perform well for shooting fast moving birds (i'd assume you'd be looking for a fast telephoto lens) isn't going to be an ideal lens for shooting the family portrait, so what your asking doesn't make sence to me.
If you need to explain in your project why you picked a certain body or lens over another then you need to understand photography a whole lot more than you would expect just to complete a project.

thanks guys that helps a lot. I also think the project is a little dumb seeing as there are more variables that go into this than lets say choosing a new tv. Have any of you ever had to return anything or had a problem with anything not working quite right?
