Thank you, My budget is the $500-$600 range. I am looking for a Digital SLR camera.Will mostly be doing nature photo's as a side hobby so I am looking for a camera with good quality.

We're always nice... Jshrz seriously though I don't know. I just like Nikon some as you can see some like Cannon. I will say though the Nikon looks better. By the way the professionals are really nice and this is a great forum, welcome..:hug::.

Well I doubt anyone will say 'Cannon'...Canon, maybe.

Between those 2? the XSI. Those 2 cameras aren't direct competitors! the D40 is entry level, and the XSI is the highest consumer grade camera Canon makes. Compare it to the D80 or the D90, and it's the Nikons all the way, but against the low end, years old D40, there's not that much discussion. (And I'm a Nikon guy.)

I'm with clarinetJWD: between those too, I'd go with the Canon. If you can manage just a little more $$, then there are all kinds of Christmas deals / sales going on. Here's just one example of a D60 two lens VR kit for only $100 more than your $500-600 range:
