Read the manual.

I'm not sure about the Nikons. In the manual and semi-manual modes on my canon, the flash will not pop up. In the automatic modes, there are one or two modes that suppress flash but most of the auto-modes will automatically pop the flash.

I'm sure the D60 behaves at least similarly.

RTFM!!!!! That should have been the first thing to read. My 30D manual even goes into detail about bokeh and DoF. btw, RTFM is Read The F*n Manual! Its a tech term. We scream it all the time.
