Can others edit my Photos
Photos NOT OK to edit
Hello-

I have just begun to take photos for others and received a request to give someone some shots i took in hi-res...HOW DO I DO THAT??? I know it must be a very basic request, but I have no idea and any help is greatly appreciated!!

Thank you

Basically, they are just asking for a file that is suitable for printing. Generally, when you email someone a pic you are probably sending a small file that is around 72 dpi and maybe 600x800 pixels such as what you see here in the forums. It looks fine on the monitor, but you can't print it out very well like that. So a high resolution file would be something in the 240-300 dpi neighborhood. If you know they are going to print it, you may want to go ahead and crop it to a standard format as well like 5x7 or 8x10. Any image software can resize an image. I think irfanview, which is free, can do it as well.

Thank you for answering...
So if I am giving them a copy on a disk, what data will tell me if I am giving them a hi-res copy?

In windows, right-click photo...go to properties...find the "Details" tab, look for an entry for "Dimensions", if it states anything above 3888, and "Horizontal Resolution" states around 300dpi...its hi-res

It deppends on what your camera setting were to record the shot. I you had it set to say - small image size and jpeg basic. You didn't save a shot in high resolution. If your camera is set to large image size and jpeg fine then you have a good sized file / high resolution for your camera.

Basically they want a picture with the largest file size.

Thanks agent...

So the info from Aperture says: 2592 × 3888 (10.1 MP), this then is considered hi-res? And I just send the photo to be exported that way, correct?

I appreciate your help!

Thank you, thank you, thank you!!!!

Until a photo will be printed: The PPI (Pixels-Per-Inch) of the file is meaningless and only the pixel dimensions (the resolution - res) are the only numbers that have any meaning.

The term DPI (Dots-Per-Inch) does not apply to digital photographs, unless they will be printed using a half-tone, offset printing press, and even then it's a number the describes the capabilites of the press and the digitai9l image after it has been printed.

The term DPI does apply to deescribing the resolution an injket printer is capable of producing but the number of dots required to render a pixel is variable.

Okay, thank you for the insight KmH...you rock! as always!

Well, at least I said something half-way correct...I am a putergeek after-all...or a lazy admin...one of the two

So, does this mean that the info Agent gave me indicating that it is a hi-res photo is incorrect??

It is a large file (10mb) with normal pixel dimensions. It is a high resolution picture! It will produce a very good print at least 8x10 in size. Bigger with propper preperation.

No...what I said is correct...the 300 DPI I mentioned is relatively irrelevant

Give them the JPG out the camera, full-size..or your editied file (JPG or saved as a JPG) fullsize.
