Yes, that definitely draws attention to the people and not the room. Good choice.

The crop ruins the composition in my opinion.

What the image needs is better processing. The people at the bottom are 1.5 to 2 stops under exposed making the ceiling the brightest portion of the image. Using a gradient, dodging the mid-tones, or applying curves or filters in post would all have been a better choices than cropping this and not correcting the processing.

I applied some of these suggestions, but then saw you don't allow edits. Made a big difference - to my eyes anyway..
