Been watching hornets build a nest on the house lately, so I got some shots of them today since I got my buddys 100-400mm lens this weekend.

Here is the nest. I started watching when it was the size of a tennis ball, now it's about a bit larger than a volley ball. Kinda neat watching them work.

Nice! I really like 3 and 4, particularly that cropped version.

You DO know, however, that NORMAL people would say "Oh my, look--there's a tennis ball size hornet's nest on my house. I must kill them before it gets any bigger." It takes a photographer to see that and think, "Hey, if I let it get even BIGGER, I may get some great photo ops out of that!" It probably also takes someone who is not allergic to hornet stings. :lmao:

lol pretty much exactly what I did. Everyone else was like "knock it down" but instead I said "no..I can get better photos once they are done." lolol

for 3 and 4 I wish the sun had not ducked behind the clouds...had to lower my shutter speed to 1/200 instead of 1/600 on the fly to get the shot. stupid blur on his front arms and wings. Oh well, it's not like they are going anywhere so when it's sunny out I can get more. lol

I kinda like 5. To me, it's like the dad is peeking out the hole to make sure the kids are still working. lol

Your a brave man.White face or bald bald face hornets can be extremely aggressive and there sting is extremely painful. I ben stung by yellow jackets,Horn tail wood wasp and white face or Bald face hornets. White face or bald face is like being shot with a nail gun followed by massive swelling.Nice shots though.I enjoy looking at them in pictures but not through my lens unless I am 100 yards away thank you.Oh yea did I mention they fly in machIII speeds. Smack there nest a couple times and see how fast they are or should I say How fast you can run.

I don't think I'll be smacking the nest, I'll just assume they are faster than I am. lol

400mm lens? Chicken!!! ;)

Hey, my first shots were with my 17-50 f/2.8 portrait lens....and I got about a foot and a half away. Missed focus a bit 'cause I was holding the camera out in front of me like a little *****. so yeah, I'll take "chicken" with the 400 lolol

Kill it with fire. :gun:

Nice shots, you are a brave soul.

I like 2 and 4. Shows their neat design. Good pics.
