How Much To Charge?

I total up ALL my costs in a print, paper, backer, packaging, mattboard, every little item that goes into a print. I do calculate what the print would cost to have a pro-service print it for me and that cost goes into the total. Only do this if your home print is equal or better that the quality of the labs. Then multiply by at least 3 1/2 to 4 times and round up to the next $25 mark. This covers the rent, cost of equipment and my time. As far as digital being cheaper, never. The photog has the higher cost of equipment, his computer system to maintain and keep backed-up and updates current, and the time involved with post production and the total control and responsibility that involves. Most film shooters send off the film and forget about it untill time to deliver. Digital done right is more work and time intensive, but the control and turnaround is well worth the time and money invested. JMHO
