How to change exposure?

I have a nikon D50, I am not sure how to change the exposure on this camera. I have been through the cameras menu and the book. Does anyone know how to?

The exposure compensation -/+ button is right behind the shutter release; hold that and turn the dial (if I remember correctly). Or you could just use manual exposure mode
