How to Get More in Focus?

Newbie question...

How do I get more of a shot in focus? I've seen pictures where the subject, background, and foreground are all nicely in focus, but I don't know how to do it.

Read up on Depth of Field.

Aperature and distance to subject as well as the lens come to play in DOF. Try shooting in Aperature priority and vary the aperature on the same subject and view your results.
