How to get this "Effect" on my photos?

We have a Canon Rebel T1i, and I'm just learning to use it. I'm new to this,and will love to learn more!
One of the first things I will like to know, is how to take photos with the effect that shows certain part of the photo is sharp focus and the background (for example) is softer (or blurry)

I want to take photos of my cupcakes, sweets, and party favors .. like shown in these photos:
Do they get this effect with the camera or using photoshop? I noticed that the front and back is blurred but the center is sharp.






How do I get started on photography and how do I get this effect?

is there any goof book or tutorial that can help me?

Firstly you should not upload other people's work to the forum, it is against the forum rules, reference material should be linked instead.

The effect that you are after is called depth of field which is achieved by using a large apperture/f-stop (small f-stop number, e.g. 1.4 or 1.8).
