Just a little rant to people who will understand. I promised DH when I got my nex7 that I would sell my dslr to help fund it. So I sold my xsi, 18-55 (ish) and 55-300 (ish I can't remember exactly) tamron lens's along with a bag full of accessories for $200. Yes you read that right.

I've loved my camera and been able to get around the AF issues with mirror less pretty easily since then- until this weekend. My boys got their first dirt bikes and my camera just couldn't keep up. I got some good snapshots to remember the day. I will always appreciate them because I can see the joy on their faces, But they are almost all blurry and out of focus. I'm so sad because some of these could have been really awesome pictures. I hope whoever has my canon ADORES it and it sparked a passion for her and that it didn't get put up in a closet.

Ohhhh...this is heart breaking, reading about a camera letting a mom down on a special day. Equipment issues suck! I've been reading Thom Hogan's sansmirror.com website for a year now, following along somewhat on the various mirrorless options, and the ONE area that he mentions regularly and repeatedly as still being a major area of difference between mirrorless and d-slr is autofocus performance, especially with ACTION subjects; he dings EVERY single mirrorless camera, except for the Nikon 1-system models, as being "apart from" the d-slr cameras in terms of AF performance levels. Kinda sucks...

Not to sound like I am blaming you, but is there any way you could have "stepped back in time 60 years", and maybe gone to a method of shooting pictures where the focus is set ahead of time, and the subject is snapped ONLY when it is at the same distance? You know, like pre-focusing on say a set distance, or a specific "place" where the boys could zoom by on their bikes, and you'd shoot images only at that pre-determined area? That's the way I learned to shoot track and field events using a late 1930's Argoflex twin lens camera, with its f/4.5 lens and 1/200 second top shutter speed and ASA 100 B&W film, back in junior high. The focusing on that old bakelite plastic beast was so antiquated! I had to use the flip-up magnifier, pre-focus, and then wait for the action to occur, whereupon I could shoot exactly ONE frame and then I had to...wait for the next event.

Derrel, I probably could have, but I was trying to juggle being a mom and being a photographer. The 2 year old can't break- so he was attached to a strap and we had to run along behind him to keep him from crashing. (And he was FAST! My legs are jello today!) The older one kept killing his bike and needed help restarting it, and my nephew needed driven around on the 4 wheeler. So I would pick up my camera take a QUICK shot and have to go switch chasing someone around. this time, I chose to live in the moment instead of observe. KWIM?

I had the idea of never getting rid of camera gear over a decade ago....
now i have a closet full of old cameras and lenses. (well, slightly less full nowadays)

And wow! What effort it used to take to shoot sports! Sports have never been on my list of things to photograph. Then I had 2 boys and I guess I need to learn better!

I vote for living in the moment, and just shooting a few iPhone snaps, and maybe a couple video clips. Yeah, I know what you mean.

hahah! I hear you, but I also let go I some manual lens's a while ago thinking I wouldn't go back into film. Now I realize I could have adapted them to my nex7. If only I knew then what I do now....I'd gladly store a closet full of junk! Lol

thanks Derrel! I didn't even do video. I should have. Luckily I'll have many more opportunities to try again!

I used a P&S pocket camera for a while as my kids took alot of time away ... runnings around, etc. I used video and photo, but alot of video.
But now that they are older the dslr is much better.

the other day when my little girl got her first goal of the season, she looked at the pics on my dslr .. and then asked if I could do video instead.

I have one of those standard closets. Unfortunately, I have a decent sized house with one closet, so the Tardis feature would be particularly useful. The Doctor skipped by the year my house was made, that jerk.

There's definitely times when a DSLR can be pretty handy... particularly high ISO and a high FPS shutter.
