I feel just sick

Newbie mistake number 2 of colossal proportions. So I finally bought an external hard drive on the weekend. 1.5 TB for $100 bucks and came home from camping ready to back up all of my pics etc on my desktop. And it crashed the minute I turned it on. Take it to my tech. doc and he has to wipe it. Not sure if anything will be saved but sounds doubtful. Just wanted to share. make sure you back up your **** because this royaly bites.

Well he's been my computer guy for last 6 years. Him and another guy are trying to fix it and this is just what he told me, and I do trust him. He said its much easier (cheaper, faster) to wipe and reinstall than go through and repair. His words not mine. I have my most favorite shots off hard drive on flickr and a few on facebook but all other files pfft. Ones I wanted to work on and such. I had backed up a very long time ago and havent for probably a year and definetly not since I got my Nikon. Im feeling like a dumbass atm. Where is the donkey's arse smilie.

Then go buy a new internal drive and make the other one a D: drive and dont wipe it. Thats what I think. If you still cant explore the drive then you can format it.

Ya thats the problems I was having was not being able to get into the drive at all. He cant even get into it in safe mode. I wish I knew more. I will ask him about your suggestion and see what he thinks. Thanks.

If this not too late, here's my experience. I had a HD die on me, took it to a company that did recovery and they recovered all the data on there.

I'm not a techie, not even a computer nerd, but I imagine not all techs know how to recover data since there are companies that specialize in the problem.

Anyway, it was a while back but I don't remember it being very costly.

So you may want to talk to some other techs.

Well good new is he did what Schwetty suggested all on his own lol and saved my pictures. Then he copied it all and backed it up for me and said he is officially taking away my camera lol. So my pictures were saved. Bad news is three days later the hard drive blew on my laptop haha. It is so not my week for electronics. Now do I get a mac or another pc laptop. Decisions decisions. Thanks for the tips guys. Appreciate it.

First, go to confession (at a real church)...wait a day to make sure lightning does not strike, then go ahead with your plans...:mrgreen:

I've lost a HD on a Mac once but since I hate Windows machines I don't have much experience with the longevity of their HD. However, I doubt there is any difference. Gear failure happens, deal with it.

And the way to deal with it, which I hope you've learned with these two failures, is redundancy. Multiple backups to multiple HDs some of which should be kept in a different location.

I have the money to get another PC at the moment but I have it leaning towards a new lens lol and yes Cloudwalker my lesson is learned. Multiple backups of my most important pics and documents.

I share your pain, lost mine back in Oct 2009. Recovered some, but not all. While everyone keeps saying "back up your stuff", for whatever reason, it takes something like this to wake us up.

As I reach out and touch my film negatives to assure myself they are safe...I understand how awful this must be.
