I am having trouble finding out information on a Nikon AF Nikkor 50mm f/1.8G. I have been to DPreviews and looked at the f/1.4G and am just trying to find some more info about the other. I just want to make sure that when I spend $500.00 im getting the right lens. I am wanting to shoot portraits indoor and outdoors. I am also looking to get a nikon SB700 but right now do not have any lighting things. Hope that is enough info, again sorry I know this has been brought up before but am having trouble finding the posts.
Thanks :)

Enough info for what? Did you have a question?

50 mm is the short end of the portrait focal length range.

Many use an 85 mm focal length, like Nikon's "Cream Machine" the AF 85 mm f/1.4D, and some of the best portraits are made using 200 mm for the focal length..

The fact is doing portraiture indoors and outdoors reguires a range of focal lengths.

Yeah i guess that was not very specific. I just am trying to compair the two lenses the 50mm 1.4 and the 1.8. there is a big price diffrence and im trying to learn why. I am still trying to learn all about lenses. I know and agree with you KmH about the diffrent lenes needed to take portraits. This is just where I am deciding to start because of price and versatility. I was just trying to say portraits are one thing i will be focusing on but i will be using it for many other things.

The f/1.4 costs a lot more to make than the f/1.8.

The main cost increase is in the amount, and quality of the glass.

By the way, Nikon doesn't make an AF 50 mm f/1.8G. They have a new lens - the AF-S 50 mm f/1.8G or the older AF 50 mm f/1.8D.

Thank you KmH, that is was i was thinking but just wanted to see what others views where. I would love to get the 85mm but at $1,699.00 its out of my range right now but some time in the future. I still trying to decied if when i get that kinda cash iff i should get a prime or a zoom lens, but will cross that bridge when i get there. :)

I would not be surprised if the new 50mm f/1.8 AF-S G Nikkor is optically a very good lens, even at the $219 price point. In fact, I expect that it will be an excellent performer.

Yes I was Wrong about it being $1,699.00 I was looking at the wrong lens. It is only $999.95. My bad. I was looking at the 85mm G which is $1,699.00. The 85mm D is only $999.95.
