This article opened my eyes. There have been numerous times when I've tried to print an image, and found it to be overall grey when I've gotten my blacks. Maybe proofing will help me in many ways!

How to Make a Proper Proof Sheet

How do you guys proof?

I have always made a contact sheet and use the minimum time for max black to determine my starting time for making my print. Have been teaching that method for at least 40 years or better.

As long as nothing changes, i.e. developer, paper, film, magnification, the base time will always be the same, for contact sheet and initial print.

Minimum time for maximum black is something I haven't paid attention to, but it's so obvious now. Paying attention to properly expose in camera is so important.

I need to make one of these contact sheet devices :)

Not hard to make+ many commercial version can be found for not much money. If your using printfile negative selves you need to be sure the frame and paper match the selves and perhaps think about using 8,5 X11 for the contact sheet as 8x10 is a bit small.
