I need a new one ...but which one ???

Hi everyone , I currently have a Canon 450D and it is now about 7 years old and it has seen good days. Since I am a kind of amateur but an enthusiastic one and I have some good pictures to boast about (sometimes) and now I feel I really need an upgrade . I plan to go to the London Camera Exchange to try my luck . I am looking at either Canon 70D or Nikon D5200. Please advise as to which one is good and recommended. Along with my Canon 450D I have the 18-55 mm lens, a sigma wide angle and a old Canon 10-20mm. I do not mind giving away my cannon lenses in the exchange if I am going in for a Nikon . I can still use my Sigma wide angle with the Nikon .
My friend has a Nikon and she being an amateur as well comes up with fab pics and my Canon do not produce that now . Please help as to which one I should go for and I do not want a very very expensive one too.Within £800 is fine I hope .

It generally is not the camera body that makes "fab pics," but rather the lens and the photographer. If you really want one, pick the camera that has the features you want, and that "fits" in your hands, but don't be too surprised of the photos aren't much better.

You'd be better off spending your money on better glass.

I think you should be looking at either the Nikon D7100 or Canon 70D as they are about equal in their categories.
They are currently the top crop sensor cameras of their companies.

Canon 70D vs Nikon D7100 is something that was debated a lot here, both cameras are good and you cant go wrong with either but they are different and each was designed to be better at other things.

Nikon D7100 has the slight advantage at better low light performance and dynamic range while the Canon 70D has the advantage in video making and sport shooting.
If you are looking at a pure picture making machine the Nikon D7100 is slightly better, if you want to make videos and do lots of sport shooting the Canon 70D has the advantage.

But dont get me wrong the Nikon can do a good job too in sport shooting and take good videos while the Canon can produce excellent pictures too, as I said you really cant go wrong with either.
I personally chose the Nikon D7100 and absolutely love it!!!

I'm assuming you've already done some research into this before narrowing it down to the two cameras you've listed above. So, in generall:

The Canon shoots faster (7 frames per second as opposed to 5) and will have a little bit better capabilities when it comes to shooting video.

The Nikon will give you higher quality still images with better dynamic range and a little bit higher details in the image.

In the interest of full disclosure I shoot Nikon myself, the D5100. I think it does an excellent job overall and I like the fact that I have a lot of different upgrade options when I do decide to replace the camera, there are several crop sensor bodies more advanced that offer me several different options in the Nikon line up.

I have both a Canon and a Nikon. I think that the camera brand does not matter much, they are both capable cameras in any situation. You really need to think about the lenses. I find that I can get better deals on Nikon lenses, you can buy really old ones that work well.

I strongly believe your camera is capable of producing awarding winning photos. Changing the camera has some impact, but not much on the end result. Is it better to get a newer camera? Of course yes, but just don't expect drastic photo improvement after the upgrade.

Personally, I found upgrading my lenses, my photography knowledge and my post processing technique have more impact on my photos then upgrading the camera body.


As for between Nikon 5200 and Canon 70D, I will pick the 70D simply because of the top display. I prefer DSLR camera with a top display (personal preference) so if your questions is Nikon 5200 vs D90, I will chose D90 as well. You can call me lazy, but I just like the way how the top display works (in Canon since that is what I use now). I can change camera settings such as ISO, or shooting / meter mode while I am still looking through the viewfinder. With my old XTi, I need to look at the screen, press few buttons to navigate to the desire function and change the settings.

Also, if you Sigma lens has a Canon lens mount, it cannot be mount directly on a Nikon body. You may need to get a Nikon mount version lens.

I looked at the Canon 70D yesterday at a store...I thought it was the best-handling of the intermediate Canons. The viewfinder images was good, and I liked the AF system display, and the camera felt good in the hand. I also looked at Canon's teensy-tiny little miniaturized d-slr..the viewfinder image was hard to see at the corners, and seemed shrunken down. I was not impressed with the view through the camera, which is to me at least, a critical factor in how well I can shoot a camera.
