So I tried something different, and decided to shoot a person.
Nikon D90
50mm

Help me out
Critique me, give me tips, suggestions, all that.

I'd love to be a fly on the wall when this phrase flags up in a CIA internet key word search!

Nice shot. A little underexposed but I think it worked in this instance. I like it. Avoid placing your subject in the middle though.

Oh I know right? I was going to title it "I shot a person, am I going to jail?" but I thought that wouldn't look too good..
But I guess now that I just wrote it, it's the same thing to the CIA.. oh well.

I'll definitely keep in mind to get my subject out of the middle the next time around.
I shopped this up real quick

The off center framing is way better. Still seems way underexposed to me. I would have intentional over exposed this and tried to get a golden outline around her. But thats me.

subject is underexposed and the bokeh doesn't look good, in fact it's very distracting. Nice pose, nice model and decent composition.

what lens, and what settings did you shoot that with? The bokeh is really busy... and distracting....

Nice shot except for that, although I would prefer the background sky not be blown out..

Yes I agree, the bokeh is crummy.
I was hoping to go for a creamier looking blend.

This was shot at ISO 200 f2.8, 1/400, (I think, I'll check later)
I was shooting facing east, so the sun was behind her.

f1.8 I think gave me better bokeh, but it was too shallow

Any tips for me for my next try?
Lens recommendations?

try shooting at f4-5. You may get better results

With photography, there are also lots of different preferences on what everyone likes. I love the comp, but the background blur seems a bit much and seems to take away from the beautiful woman.

Of course, it's all personal preference
But It is nice to see and hear what hobbyists and/or professional photographers think of a picture

I'll see what I can do with the background next time around.
I know I can clean it up in post, but I'd rather learn some raw photographing techniques.

Got a funny story: I was shooting a wedding in NY Hilton and while in the elevator, this lady walked in. She saw my ladder and thought I was one of the maintenance people "Sir, are you going to change that bulb here?" "No ma'am, I use this ladder to stand on and shoot people"- I replied. After few seconds of silence and watching this lady's eye pop out and dentures nearly hitting the floor I added "I'm a photographer and there's a wedding here tonight", after which the elevator door opened and I came out.
Buddy of mine (my photography mentor), may he rest in piece, used to say "I'm the only guy in the world who gets to shoot his mother in law, she loves and wants more of it".
