I'm going to yellow stone. I have a 50mm 1.8 and a sigma 18-50 2.8f I also have a promaster 6400 tripod. The camera is a D90. What other essential things would you advise me to bring? I want to get some one chance in a lifetime pictures.

Possibly a polarizer and grad filter for landscapes, as well as a remote for long exposures. Bring a sturdy camera bag too, weatherproof and well made, etc. If you have access to a long lens get it of course. Also maybe a flashlight/headlamp, for night photos (thats what that 6400iso ceiling is for :) )

You need a long lens! The least expensive option is the nikon 70-300mm af Ed , these sell for only around $90 on the used market.Personally I'd spring for a 600mm f5.6 Ed ais manual focus lens. This lens has amazing quality, comparable to the $7000 600mm f4, but you can buy it used for only $1500. It won't meter on the d90 but that's not s big of deal as you might think (outdoor lighting conditions are pretty static).

It's an amazing place to see and photograph.

If you want to save some $$$ have you considered renting some lenses?

I shot a lot with the 100-400 and a 16-35 for the wide stuff. I agree.... you need a long lens for the extra reach.

Couple of options... ( I used Lens Rentals for the 16-35... great service)

LensRentals.com - Rent Canon, Nikon, Olympus, or Sony Lenses

or

Rent professional cameras or camera lenses for Canon, Nikon, Sony, Olympus, Leica and Pentax

Have wonderful trip... again... it's an awesome place to see. I can't wait to go back.

Well, I used to live and work around that area. My friends tell me they are having a rather cold year, so take cold weather clothing.

Yellowstone national park is a supervolcano caldera. Not just part of the park. The entire park. All 2,219,791 acres of it.
That's why Yellowstone has all those nifty geysers and hot pools of bubbling mud. Supervolcano - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

It blows about every 600,000 years. The last time it blew was 630,000 years ago. It may be over-due. When it did it blanketed 15 states with ash up to 25 feet deep.

A couple of years ago water started spilling out of one end of one of the lakes in the park. They soon realised that the land at other end of the lake was rising tilting the entire lake.

Don't worry. If it blows while you're there, your brain probably won't have time to perceive it blew. ;)
