i'm looking for a camera to shoot "shallow focus" pictures - what do i need?

Oh, Nikon has autofocus on all bodies - unless you buy the AF instead of the AF-S version. The AF version is cheaper, but needs an autofocus motor on the camera.

Not completely inaccurate. Entry level bodies need af-s lenses because they do not have an autofocus motor in them. Non af-s lenses will not autofocus on the entry level bodies. Af-s lenses are slightly more expensive.

So yes - all Nikon DSLR's will autofocus - some get their autofocus through the body whereas others get it through the lens.

Any Canon (Xs is cheap for example) will do it. Remember that the Nikon 50/1.8 has not autofocus on entry level bodies.

You realize that I wasn't talking to you, right? Instead, my post was directed toward Solarflare.

Additionally, you posted almost the exact same thing twice. You're so creative with rebuttals, that you're not even rebutting anything said to you.

If you're really interested, I've never owned a P&S camera.

Really I knew, but the OP initially wanted to spend very few money, and not getting too much into photography. So I simply avoided any unuseful detail - i.e., the 100$ 50/1.8 does not autofocus on entry level bodies. The G version is almost the double.
