I'm really torn between these two camera systems, help me choose!

Hey guys, new to the forum, but not new to the photography world. About 3 years ago I had all of my gear stolen (Canon 7D & 3 lenses, plus my pack and all the accessories in it). Since that happened I had kind of given up on photography as I didn't have the money to reinvest in a new setup at the time. I did not shoot professionally, I was strictly a hobbyist but did do the occasional low-key wedding, etc to help out a friend or a friend of a friend.

Now I am getting to a point in my life where I literally can't stand not having a good photography setup. I've been working with phone cameras the past 3 years and I'm just tired of it. My wife and I are trying to have a baby and I definitely want to be able to document the babies first years with good photo's.


Back when my gear was stolen, I told myself if I ever got back in to this I wouldn't mess around and I'd definitely go for a full-frame setup. I was always impressed with my friends full frame setup and amount of versatility in the shots he was able to take due to that extra sensor size.

Fast forward to now, and I've been doing my research, and the Canon 6D w/ 24-105 definitely seems like the ticket for me. I was ready to hit the checkout button until I saw the Fuji X-T1.... After looking through many many sample photo's and reading reviews, I was absolutely BLOWN AWAY by the image detail captured by this crop body camera. It seems to handle high ISO low-light shooting just as capably as almost any full frame on the market. I also felt like the majority of the comparison photo's I looked at between it and the 6D, the X-T1 actually had sharper more detailed images. It really intrigued me for being a mirror-less crop body platform for $1000 less than the 6D setup I was pondering.

My question is, what the heck do I do??? Is the 6D going to be a better long term body to have? Obviously I have a lot bigger choice of lenses and accessories that can be had for a Canon platform. From what I have seen, the 24-105 f4 L that's supplied as the kit lens is not that great of a piece of glass. Most photo's I had found with this glass seemed very soft in comparison to the 18-55 that comes with the X-T1 kit.

Give me some pro's and con's on these options and what you think the better choice would be. I enjoy primarily taking landscape shots and "artistic" shots. I don't shoot a lot of people or action.

Personally I do not think there are much differences in image quality between the 2 systems.

I'm not an expert (I'm sure those will chime in soon!) and I don't know much about the xt1, but I do know, that after switching to mirror-less 2 years ago, I find myself going back to a DSLR because the mirror-less systems AF (besides the nikon 1, as far as I am aware) just can't keep up with my kids. I got sick of saying " hold still" when trying to snap a shot, and it was hopeless in sporting situations. Definitely something I would research heavily before deciding! There really no telling a 2 year old "hold still" and even babies are faster than you think.

I dunno...tough choice I think. High-end mirrorless "MILC" versus an entry-level Canon FF body...both have plusses, both have minuses. Have you had the chance to hold, examine, and test shoot either one? It's possible that an in-the-flesh shooting session might eliminate, or elevate, one of the two options. I had a 5D CLassic and 24-105 f/4 L IS USM for a number of years...the lens is decent. Good RANGE of focal lengths for a one-lens solution.

I'm just not a fan of Nikon. Not for any reason other than I've always been a Canon shooter and if I were to look outside of that brand it just wouldn't be to Nikon. The D600 problems really scare me as far as their design and quality control goes recently too.....

As far as I know, this has been nearly completely remedied with the X-T1. Of the reviews I've read the autofocus is near instantaneous and one of the reasons this particular setup really sets the bar for mirrorless kits. I would love to be able to test this before making the commitment though!

Thanks for the link, I will have a read! I've not had any hands on experience with either but I have had the pleasure of shooting with a 5D3 and from what I can tell the IQ between it and the 6D are identical if not slightly better than the 5D3. Canon is familiar too me as I've owned a plethora of them, so the familiarness definitely gets a check in that column. But, I'm not afraid to try something new. I absolutely LOVE the look of the X-T1 and the fact that it has dedicated hardware knobs for the most important shooting settings.

I had a 5d classic also and that 24-105mm lens. I really liked the setup (only getting rid of it when my lens malfuctioned and repaired) but when I got rid of the canon gear I bought into the m4/3rd system and was surprised by how good the image quality was, even at high iso. I do really like it but did miss the tracking etc that a dslr offers(so bought a d7100). I believe the fugi has a better sensor than the m4/3rds, so really I dont think image quality would be an issue at all. I did also read the fugi tracks well. You may find that an evf though is not as good as an ovf (though some prefer it). You will however miss out a little on subject seperation at large aperture for portraits etc with the crop over the fullframe.

As said above if you try both it may well decide for you.
